Broadband providers Virgin Media and Sky Broadband have today been praised by Ofcom’s Q2 2017 UK consumer complaints report after they received fewer gripes than any other ISP for their service. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for BT and TalkTalk, which attracted the most complaints.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has formally lodged a legal appeal against the matter of Ofcom’s forthcoming 4G / 5G radio spectrum auction in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands. The aim is to stop Three UK’s own challenge from imposing a cap on their ability to bid for a slice of 3.4GHz band.

A new report from Point Topic has revealed significant variations in 4G based (Mobile Broadband) pricing and usage caps across Europe, with consumers in the United Kingdom paying less for their monthly tariffs but often receiving fairly meagre data allowances in return.

Mobile operator Three UK has this week carried out their threat to pursue a Judicial Review of Ofcom’s forthcoming 4G and 5G radio spectrum auction in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which will seek to impose a tougher spectrum cap that could stop EE (BT) from bidding.

Mobile operator Three UK has quietly introduced a new “Advanced” plan with a 100GB data cap, as well as “all-you-can-eat” minutes and calls, which seems designed to sit in-between their current 30GB capped tariff and the top “all-you-can-eat” data tier. But there’s a catch.. of course.

Mobile operator Three UK has today published their latest results for the first half of 2017 (here), which among other things reveals that their 3G and 4G indoor network coverage has now reached 97% (up from 81% in 2015) and 4G population coverage is at 91%.

The latest H1 2017 report from RootMetrics has revealed the 4G mobile performance and availability of O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE across England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland. Overall EE takes the crown for Mobile Broadband speed and coverage, while Three UK won for reliability and calls.

After various delays and a bizarre campaign (here), Ofcom has today set out the final rules and caps for their auction of radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which will help mobile operators to launch “very fast” Mobile Broadband (4G and 5G) services by 2020.

Customers on almost all of Three UK’s “Advanced” 4G Mobile plans (i.e. those with a data allowance of 4GB or more) can now benefit from the operator’s new “Go Binge” service, which provides “unlimited data … for streaming video and music” from Netflix, Deezer, Soundcloud and TVPlayer.

The first half of 2017 has seen another rise in average fixed line broadband download speeds to 28.21Mbps, albeit mostly fuelled by the on-going migration of consumers from older ADSL lines and on to newer “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services. Meanwhile EE is still king for Mobile Broadband.

Ofcom has used crowd-sourced data collected from 4,288 users of their Smartphone app to reveal that 72% of users in UK urban areas were satisfied with their overall mobile service, although this falls to just 56% in rural areas. Elsewhere WiFi gave the best YouTube speed (average of 6.6Mbps).

The telecoms regulator has today hit mobile operator Three UK with a fine of £1,890,000 after its network was temporarily unable to provide customers in Kent, Hampshire and parts of London with access to the emergency services (police, fire etc.), which wasn’t helped by reliance on a single data centre.

Mobile operator EE has come out on top in a new RootMetrics study of YouTube’s video streaming via 4G and 3G mobile networks in London, which rated all four primary mobile operators by several criteria (e.g. video resolution, time taken to start a video, playback freezes / buffering etc.).

Consumer magazine Which? has published the outcome from their first 2017 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Giffgaff top with a customer score of 81%. Sadly Vodafone and EE could both be found languishing at the bottom of the table on 50% (tied).
