Customers of Three UK are reporting that the mobile operator appears to have suffered a significant network outage overnight, which began at just after 11pm and is still on-going for some users. Most of the problem appears to be centred around data (mobile broadband) connectivity, although access issues with text s and voice calls are also reported.

The latest October 2019 Mobile Network Experience report from Opensignal, which used crowd-sourced data to test 4G and 3G based UK Mobile (Mobile Broadband) performance, has once again named EE as the best overall operator as it beat arch rivals Vodafone, O2 and Three UK in almost every single category.

As first promised last year, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has finally reached a new standardised wayleaves (land or property access) agreement, which aims to make the process of deploying new rooftop base stations (cell sites) for UK mobile network operators both easier and faster so as to improve 4G and 5G coverage.

Crowdsourced data researcher Tutela has examined the mobile network (3G, 4G) and mobile broadband performance of the United Kingdom’s 10 largest cities and discovered that London (England) is the worst of the bunch, while Glasgow (Scotland) is the best. Meanwhile EE was named the best operator for 8 of the 10 cities.

The Citizens Advice agency has this morning called Three UK out for “being the only major provider to refuse to commit to measures to stop ripping off all its loyal customer,” with the organisation claiming that the operator overcharges loyal customers by between £1.5 and £2.7 million a month.

Mobile operator Three UK has today pledged that existing customers can expect “performance improvements” (i.e. faster mobile broadband speeds) of up to 150% as part of a major upgrade, which will see them both rollout L-Band (1.4GHz) technology to boost 4G and switch some of their 3G spectrum to 4G.

Mobile operator Three UK are keen to showcase the benefits of their new “ultra-fast” 5G home broadband network (here) and to that end they’ve agreed a new partnership with Activision, which will help to promote the remaster of the publisher’ popular Call of Duty: Modern Warefare multiplayer video game.

Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has today updated their early real-world benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 12 countries (i.e. those that have launched the service), which reveals that the United Kingdom remains the slowest of the early adopter countries (599Mbps UK vs 1815Mbps USA).

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has today published their annual 2019 State of Mobile Networks report for the United Kingdom, which among other things found that you’ll get the fastest 3G and 4G mobile broadband download speeds in Scotland (median average of 14.6Mbps). Overall EE delivered the best operator scores.

Mobile operator EE (BT) appears to have responded to pressure from Three UK and Vodafone’s new “unlimited” data (mobile broadband) plans by launching their own competing products, which they say come with “no speed restrictions” and are available today for 4G and 5G SIM-only and Smartphone plan customers starting at £34 per month.

A new UK Government funded project called NoServiceHere is hoping, among other things, to harness the power of the Twitter community in order to help identify areas (rural and urban) of poor mobile signal by curating geospatial data, which can then be used to help focus the rollout of 3G, 4G and future 5G networks.

Mobile operator Three UK informs us that new customers of their 4G based HomeFi service, which originally bundled unlimited mobile broadband data with a Huawei B311 router, are now optionally able to receive a more advanced Huawei B535 device instead.

“If it’s not Three, it’s not real 5G” said Three UK this morning (here) when promoting the launch of their new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network. In response rival operator EE (BT) is reported to have lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over the slogan, which they say is “misleading“.

Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK) will today join EE and Vodafone by confirming that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network has finally gone live, starting in busy parts of London with a £35 home broadband ISP alternative. The initial plan is to cover 25 towns and cities by the end of 2019 and deliver “at least 2x faster” speeds.

A new survey of 2,000 mobile phone using UK adults, which was conducted by Global Wireless Solutions and OnePoll, has claimed that 11% of respondents felt their experience in a restaurant had “been ruined due to poor mobile connectivity.” Meanwhile EE and O2 offered the most reliable service while inside such eateries.

RootMetrics will today publish their latest H1 2019 study of 4G mobile network performance in the United Kingdom, which once again concluded that EE (BT) is overall still the top performing operator and also delivered the fastest aggregate mobile broadband download speed in UK-wide testing (37.6Mbps). Sadly O2 remains at the bottom.
