The national communications regulator, Ofcom, has today partnered with the UK Regulators Network (UKRN) to publish a series of new scorecards that are intended to help customers compare several key areas from the largest broadband ISPs, mobile and phone providers. But what of smaller providers? Forget about it.

Infrastructure firm Magdalene (part of M Group Services) has signed a new 5 year deal to help develop and upgrade 4G / 5G mobile sites (e.g. Masts) for Mobile Broadband Network Ltd (MBNL), which is the Joint Venture between Three UK and EE (BT) that is responsible for the management and deployment of their shared sites.

Mobile operator Three UK has this week discounted their 4G and future 5G based unlimited calls, texts and data (mobile broadband) SIM-Only plan for new customers to just £10 per month for the first 6 months of service (£20 thereafter). The catch is that you’ll have to take it alongside a long 24 month contract term.

Three UK has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that the long wait for eSIM support on their 3G, 4G and 5G network may finally be coming to an end. The mobile operator plans to launch customer trials “within the next few months.” Rivals O2, EE (BT) and Vodafone have already launched eSIM, albeit with varying different levels of support.

Customers of mobile operator Three UK have this week noticed that they can no longer sign-up to use the company’s exclusive Wuntu rewards app, which instead warns those who try that the service is set to close on 15th December 2019. Admittedly many of its users claim that it had recently become a bit.. naff.

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchison 3G UK) has today revealed that the rollout of their new 5G mobile network is running “slightly behind” their original plan, which they suggest is due to some issues with planning permission, securing the right backhaul capacity and migration to their new cloud core network.

The latest Q2 2019 consumer complaints report from Ofcom has confirmed that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most moans for fixed line broadband, while Plusnet were the worst for landline phone and Virgin Media did the same for both Mobile and Pay TV. On the flip side Sky Broadband generated the fewest gripes.

RootMetrics has just published their third report into the tentative early availability and mobile broadband performance of UK 5G Mobile networks, which this time focuses upon the UK capital city of London. As before EE came top for both average download speeds (149.2Mbps) and network availability (60.6%).

A number of data (mobile broadband) connected users on Three UK’s 4G mobile network have now reported that their connection has been assigned an IPv6 internet address, as well as the usual IPv4. At present this looks to be a limited customer field-trial, which often comes ahead of a major roll-out.

RootMetrics has today published their second report into the tentative initial availability and mobile broadband performance of 5G Mobile networks, albeit this time focused upon the city of Cardiff in Wales. Overall EE UK came top for both average download speeds (163.1Mbps) and network availability (43.4%).

The Scottish Government‘s £25m 4G Infill Programme, which began in March 2018 and aims to improve rural mobile coverage (mostly across the Highlands and Islands region) by building a network of 45 new masts (here), has so far not built any new sites and only 3 are expected to begin construction in the “very near future.”

The Government’s Culture Secretary, Nicky Morgan MP, has revealed that Mobile Network Operators (Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE / BT) could face huge fines – worth up to 10% of their annual turnover – if they fail to meet their new 4G / 5G geographic UK coverage obligations by 2026.

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that they will proceed to auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands in spring 2020 to boost new 5G networks to potentially Gigabit-capable (1000Mbps+) mobile broadband speeds. But in light of last week’s Shared Rural Network deal (here), the coverage obligation is gone.

RootMetrics has today published their first tentative report into the initial availability and mobile broadband performance of 5G Mobile networks in the West Midlands city of Birmingham, which sees EE delivering the fastest data speeds and strongest coverage.

The Government has today announced a new £1bn deal with Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE (BT) to establish a new Shared Rural Network (SRN), which will see the mobile operators working cooperatively together in order to extend the geographic coverage of 4G (mobile broadband) services to 95% of the UK by 2025.

Mobile operator Three UK, specifically their Three Wholesale division, has today announced their first pilot of a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN / LPWA), which is intended to form the foundation for an eventual nationwide roll-out in order to help connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices (e.g. remote sensors, smart devices etc.).

At some point in the future Vodafone, O2, Three UK and EE (BT) may take the decision to start switching off their old 2G (GPRS, EDGE etc.) mobile networks; mostly used for voice. A new report from the UK Spectrum Policy Forum and Real Wireless helps to highlight some of the challenges this could create.
