Mobile operator Three UK has today published their full year results for 2017, which among other things revealed that monthly Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) data usage per customer grew by 7% during 2017 to 6.8GB (GigaBytes) and indoor population coverage is now 98.5% (up from 95% last year).

The telecoms regulator has today opened a new investigation to examine whether some of the new 4G mobile plans and add-ons being offered by Three UK and Vodafone are compliant with the EU’s new Net Neutrality rules, which are designed to protect the open internet from abuse.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today approved six telecoms operators’ to take part in the forthcoming auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum, which will see 40MHz of frequency in the 2.3GHz band and 150MHz in the 3.4GHz band being distributed.

iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone) today claims to have become the first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in the United Kingdom to introduce Wi-Fi Calling, which allows customers with no 3G or 4G data connection to make or receive calls (and send texts) via WiFi.

RootMetrics has today released their H2 2017 study of 4G mobile network performance across 16 of the United Kingdom’s most populated metropolitan markets (cities), which predictably scored EE as the best overall network operator and they’re followed in second place by Three UK.

Mobile operators Three UK, EE, O2 and Vodafone have all confirmed that they’ll introduce mid-contract price rises for subscribers, which as usual will be conducted in line with inflation as measured via the Retail Price Index (RPI). The RPI figure for January 2018 was 4%.

Last night the Court of Appeal in London rejected Three UK’s final attempt to have Ofcom impose a 30% spectrum cap on their forthcoming auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which would have stopped EE (BT) from bidding and hampered Vodafone.

The annual uSwitch.com Awards 2018 were held last night, which saw budget ISP Plusnet pick-up the most wins for fixed line home broadband services and giffgaff grab the largest number of awards for their mobile service. Meanwhile NOW TV was named as the best TV provider.

A quirky 2016 advertising campaign by Three UK, which called upon Ofcom’s CEO to “Make the Air Fair” by imposing a mobile spectrum ownership cap of 30% that would have hit EE (BT) and Vodafone, has been banned after the Advertising Standards Authority branded it “misleading.”

Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has today published their annual ‘Speedtest Market Report‘ for the United Kingdom. Overall the country ranked 29th in the world for average fixed line broadband ISP speeds (Virgin Media is the fastest) and just 46th for mobile (EE is the fastest).

Mobile operator O2 will tomorrow cut the charges on their Classic Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) SIM from 5p a min calls, 5p a text and 5p per Megabyte of data (Mobile Broadband) to just 3p a min for calls, 2p a text and 1p per MB, which matches Three UK’s allegedly “unbeatable” pricing.

Ofcom has today introduced a new change that means switching Mobile Network Operator (2G, 3G or 4G) in the United Kingdom will now become as easy as simply sending a free text message, although the new system won’t be fully introduced for another 18 months (1st July 2019).
