Three UK’s 4G Network Coverage Reaches 91% of the Population

Mobile operator Three UK has today published their latest results for the first half of 2017 (here), which among other things reveals that their 3G and 4G indoor network coverage has now reached 97% (up from 81% in 2015) and 4G population coverage is at 91%.

EE Come Top for UK 4G Network Availability and Speed in New Report

The latest H1 2017 report from RootMetrics has revealed the 4G mobile performance and availability of O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE across England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland. Overall EE takes the crown for Mobile Broadband speed and coverage, while Three UK won for reliability and calls.

UPD Ofcom Set 4G / 5G Spectrum Caps for 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz Mobile Auction

After various delays and a bizarre campaign (here), Ofcom has today set out the final rules and caps for their auction of radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which will help mobile operators to launch “very fast” Mobile Broadband (4G and 5G) services by 2020.

Caveats in Three UK’s New “Go Binge” 4G Plans with Unlimited Streaming

Customers on almost all of Three UK’s “Advanced” 4G Mobile plans (i.e. those with a data allowance of 4GB or more) can now benefit from the operator’s new “Go Binge” service, which provides “unlimited data … for streaming video and music” from Netflix, Deezer, Soundcloud and TVPlayer.

UPD Ofcom Q1 2017 UK Consumer Complaints Report Slaps BT and TalkTalk

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2017 study of UK consumer complaints about fixed line Broadband, Phone, Pay TV and Mobile services has praised Sky (Sky Broadband) for receiving the fewest gripes. Meanwhile BT, TalkTalk and Vodafone are highlighted for attracting the most complaints.

The first half of 2017 has seen another rise in average fixed line broadband download speeds to 28.21Mbps, albeit mostly fuelled by the on-going migration of consumers from older ADSL lines and on to newer “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services. Meanwhile EE is still king for Mobile Broadband.

No Surprise as Ofcom Study Shows WiFi Beats 4G and 3G Mobile Performance

Ofcom has used crowd-sourced data collected from 4,288 users of their Smartphone app to reveal that 72% of users in UK urban areas were satisfied with their overall mobile service, although this falls to just 56% in rural areas. Elsewhere WiFi gave the best YouTube speed (average of 6.6Mbps).

Ofcom Fines Three UK £1.89m for Flawed Access to Emergency Services

The telecoms regulator has today hit mobile operator Three UK with a fine of £1,890,000 after its network was temporarily unable to provide customers in Kent, Hampshire and parts of London with access to the emergency services (police, fire etc.), which wasn’t helped by reliance on a single data centre.

RootMetrics Tests YouTube 4G Mobile Streaming Performance in London

Mobile operator EE has come out on top in a new RootMetrics study of YouTube’s video streaming via 4G and 3G mobile networks in London, which rated all four primary mobile operators by several criteria (e.g. video resolution, time taken to start a video, playback freezes / buffering etc.).

Which? H1 2017 UK Mobile Network Survey Ranks EE and Vodafone Bottom

Consumer magazine Which? has published the outcome from their first 2017 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Giffgaff top with a customer score of 81%. Sadly Vodafone and EE could both be found languishing at the bottom of the table on 50% (tied).

Ofcom Makes it Easier to Switch UK Mobile Network Operators

Switching mobile operators in the UK will shortly become as easy as sending a text message. Ofcom has proposed changes to the mobile switching process that will introduce a new “text-to-switch” system, which is expect to cost the industry £44 million to implement over 10 years.

Crowed-sourced data firm OpenSignal has today published a bit of extra information from last month’s ‘State of Mobile Networks‘ report, which reveals that Middlesbrough / Teesside delivered the best 4G coverage (82.7%) and Stoke-on-Trent is top for Mobile Broadband speed (26.6Mbps).

Three UK Moot Ultrafast Fixed Wireless Broadband for 40% of Population

Sources close to mobile operator Three UK are reported to have hinted that the provider is planning to compete with fixed line home broadband services by using their recent £250m acquisition of UK Broadband Ltd (here) to power an ultrafast fixed wireless network, covering 40% of people in UK cities.

Ofcom UK Report Compares Big Broadband and Mobile ISPs by Service Quality

Ofcom has today published a huge new report into the service quality and provision times of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs and technologies, which finds that 87% of broadband customers are satisfied with their service and this rises to 89% for landline (phone) and 92% for Mobile.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2016 (Oct-Dec) consumer complaints study has found that BT attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband services, while Plusnet did the same for fixed line phone, Vodafone had a similar problem for Mobile and once again BT also came bottom for Pay TV.

Mobile Operator Three UK Suffers Another Customer Data Breach

Mobile operator Three UK has confirmed that a fault with their online account management system meant that a “small number” of their customers were recently able to view the accounts details of other users, which included names, addresses, phone numbers, call history and past bills etc.
