The West Sussex County Council (WSCC) in England has officially published their plan and budget for the 2023 – 2024 period, which among other things has set aside a total of £13 million to invest in supporting the “roll out of high speed gigabit broadband for businesses and residents“.

The Shropshire Council in England has allocated another £500,000 (total so far of £2.5m) to help boost the value of gigabit broadband vouchers for rural areas, which means that local homes and businesses will now be able to apply for vouchers worth up to £7,000 to help them get a faster connection installed.

A new study has attempted to forecast which ten UK local authorities will see the most significant increase in their coverage of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks over the next two years. Topping the table were North East Lincolnshire, Oxford and Stevenage.

The Scottish Government has released a small update on the progress of their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT). This confirms that a total of 16,600 rural properties have so far been covered by a fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP network under the scheme (inc. 2,800 connections via R100 vouchers).

The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, yesterday initiated yet another cabinet reshuffle and this time there was another significant change. Responsibility for digital infrastructure (e.g. broadband and mobile) has now shifted to the newly formed Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

The Worcestershire County Council (WCC) in England has committed to help ensure that 90% of premises across the county will be able to access a gigabit-capable broadband ISP network by 2027, which will be partly funded via clawback (gainshare) from their earlier rollout programme with Openreach (Superfast Worcestershire).

The Welsh Government (WG) has today signalled its intention to follow England’s updated Building Regulations by launching a consultation into proposals that would echo those, not least by requiring housing developers to “ensure all new build houses be equipped with gigabit broadband capability“.

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) in England appears set to slash its spending on rural broadband upgrades for the coming year, which will see it falling sharply from £130,000 in 2022/23 to just £5,000 in 2023/24. But this change perhaps isn’t as surprising as it might first appear.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which is responsible for examining the value for money of Government projects, has today criticised various flaws in the “rushed” UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB) that has so far only been used to provide financing to deliver gigabit broadband and build solar farms.

The fifth contract awarded under the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme – worth £36 million – has today been handed to UK ISP Wildanet, which will upgrade connectivity for more than 19,250 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across rural parts of Cornwall in South West England.

The UK Gov has confirmed that two new laws came into force on 26th Dec 2022, which make it both mandatory for property developers to ensure that new build homes are constructed with support for faster broadband, and to make it easier to expand that into big residential buildings (MDU) when “rogue landlords” fail to respond.

Once again, we’re ending this year by taking a look back to see how the United Kingdom’s position, at least in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for both fixed broadband ISP and mobile (4G, 5G) data speeds, has changed since 2021. The UK fell from 35th to 44th for mobile and from 50th to 56th for fixed lines.

The Director-General of the BBC, Tim Davie, has given broadband ISPs and mobile operators something extra to think about after he proposed that the corporation could plan to “switch-off” terrestrial TV and radio signals by the end of 2030. In their place, the broadcaster would focus on online content and streaming (e.g. iPlayer).

A new Point Topic forecast of fixed line ISP network coverage, which considers both the impact of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) and Cable (DOCSIS 3.1) networks, has predicted that gigabit-capable networks will cover around 97% of the UK by 2030 and the majority of postcodes (75%) will also have the choice of up to three gigabit networks.

The Leicestershire County Council (LCC) in England has secured £1.55m of public funding from the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit programme in order to help it connect 43 public sectors sites (e.g. schools, council offices etc.) in rural areas to a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband and Ethernet network.
