The UK Gov’s Technical Definition of Gigabit Capable Broadband

One aspect of the UK Government’s new £5bn Project Gigabit programme that we haven’t touched on much is the “technical definition” for how they actually define such broadband ISP products, which is partly because this has been in a state of flux as the project evolved. But it now looks much closer to final.

Gov to Trial Running UK Fibre Broadband Lines via Water Mains

The UK Government (DCMS) has today unveiled a new £4m ‘Fibre in Water‘ project trial, which will experiment with connecting homes, businesses and mobile masts to gigabit-capable broadband in “hard-to-reach areas” (e.g. remote rural) by running Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) style lines through the water mains.

Survey Wrongly Claims 1.3 Million UK Homes Use Satellite Broadband

A somewhat questionable new survey from Uswitch, which is based on feedback from a nationally representative sample of 4,002 UK adults, has boldly claimed that 1.3 million UK households are already using a satellite broadband connection. But we can’t find anything to substantiate such a figure.

Gov Publish Next Phase of UK Rural Gigabit Broadband Rollout Plan

The UK Government will today publish the next phase (inc. Phase 1a, 1b and 2) of their £5bn Project Gigabit programme, which in this batch aims to spread 1Gbps capable broadband ISP networks to a further 1.85 million rural premises (2.2 million confirmed so far) across 26 counties in England. Gigabit vouchers have also been boosted.

Telecoms Industry Sees 24 Percent Increase in UK Digging Work

The annual Digging Up Britain 2021 report from LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig), which provides an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has reported that there was a 24% increase in the amount of digging work performed by the telecoms industry over the last 12-months.

Broadband ISP Fibrus Extend FTTP Rollout to Northern England

Belfast-based ISP Fibrus, which has spent the past couple of years deploying a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland, has today announced that their build is being extended to include 300,000 premises in the North of England (i.e. Cumbria, Northumberland and North Yorkshire).

BDUK Tweak Gigabit Broadband Voucher Rules Around Eligibility

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has tweaked the eligibility rules for rural gigabit vouchers in order to balance against the issues caused when parts of the UK are placed under a Public Review as part of the £5bn Project Gigabit programme, which can cause in-scope premises to suddenly become ineligible for vouchers.

234,000 Premises in Wales to Benefit from £5bn Project Gigabit

Website Woes Cause Problems for UK Gigabit Voucher Scheme

The UK Government’s new rural-focused Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme is said to have faced “significant challenges” due to issues with the stability of its website, which DCMS told ISPs had resulted in temporary site outages and “issues with automated supplier payments and reporting.” But only “some users” were affected.

Scottish Government Look to Improve Broadband Mapping Tech

The Scottish Government appears to be in the process of enhancing their mapping technology for the £579m Reaching 100% (R100) project, which could boost “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage in rural areas by making it easier for ISPs to identify homes that aren’t connected to such a service and are thus eligible for vouchers.

UK Grows But Fails to Climb 2021 Full Fibre Country Ranking

The FTTH Council Europe has published their annual 2021 market panorama, which ranks the countries with the strongest subscriber penetration of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) based ultrafast broadband ISP networks. The good news is that the UK has continued to show strong growth, but we remain stuck at third from the bottom.
