Customers of fixed broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) have recently been informed that the operator’s “Out of Home” public WiFi hotspot service, which also turned their existing broadband routers into wireless hotspots for anybody to access (here), is officially set to be retired “from” 1st November 2023.

Uswitch.com has unveiled the winners of their annual 2023 Telecoms Awards event, which among things saw Plusnet named as the best LARGE broadband ISP of the year, while Hyperoptic took the same award for smaller providers. Meanwhile, BT was named as the most reliable broadband ISP and giffgaff came top for mobile.

Network builder and UK ISP Zzoomm, which is being backed by Oaktree Capital and aims to cover 1 million premises with their full fibre broadband network by the end of 2025 (they’ve already covered 100,000), has reportedly joined the list of those interested in acquiring fellow network provider Trooli.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today informed us that they’ve added the newly launched Sky Kids HD channel (CH 707) to their Kids TV bundle “at no extra cost“. In addition to the channel launch, customers will also gain access to the related On Demand Sky Kids content.

Consumer website Expert Reviews has published the winners of their annual “Best Broadband Awards 2023” event, which has surveyed UK consumers in an effort to identify the best Internet Service Providers (ISP) across a range of categories. Much like last year, the overall winner was named as Plusnet, again.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today become the latest national provider to adopt a new system from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which makes it easier for those on state benefits to be approved to take their cheaper “Essential Broadband” social tariff.

The CEO and Vice Chairman of Liberty Global (VMO2), Mike Fries, has told an investor meeting that Openreach’s recently announced FTTP broadband price cuts for UK ISPs (Equinox 2) are a “desperate and premature” move by BT, which he sees as an “overreaction to the market more broadly.”

The latest Q4 2022 results from UK ISP and mobile operator VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has seen their broadband base reach 5.653m customers (up by 22.7k in Q4 vs 19.1k in Q3), while their gigabit coverage added another 188,000 premises in the quarter to total 16.14 million (54% of the UK). Now comes Nexfibre.

The parents of broadband, mobile and TV provider Virgin Media (VMO2) are allegedly exploring the possibility of a £100m bid to takeover Kent-based ISP Trooli, which is aims to deploy a gigabit-speed full fibre (FTTP) network to 1 million UK premises by the end of 2024 (in August 2022 they reported 275,000 completed).

A collaboration between UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) and the Amersham Town Council in Buckinghamshire (England) will soon allow young artists to paint a number of the operator’s broadband street cabinets around the town with pretty murals, which should make a nice change from the usually bland dark green and cream colours.

ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has confirmed that they’ve just expanded their gigabit-capable broadband network – via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology – to cover an additional 20,000 homes in the large suburban town of Southalll, West London (England). The town is home to a total population of around 70,000.

Internet traffic across UK broadband ISPs surged to a new peak on Wednesday night (15th Feb 2023), with customers of TalkTalk setting a new record of 10.25Tbps (Terabits per second), while Virgin Media hit 24.77Tbps, BT topped 29.11Tbps and the London Internet Exchange (LINX) reached a peak of around 7.87Tbps.

A collaboration between operators O2 UK (VMO2) and Vodafone, the Scottish Government’s £28.75m 4G Infill Programme (S4GI) and the UK government’s £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project has enabled two rural Scottish communities – Traquair (Peeblesshire) and Balmacara (Ross-shire) – to be covered by a 4G signal.

Ookla, which operates the popular internet Speedtest.net service, has warned that median 5G performance (mobile broadband download speeds) are declining in many early launch markets like the United Kingdom, where speeds fell by -38.26Mbps (Megabits per second) year-on-year.

Network operator Neos Networks has today been named as the preferred bidder for Network Rail’s Project Reach, which among other things could see them invest in the design and build of a new trackside fibre optic communications network. This could also help to improve UK gigabit broadband and 5G mobile coverage.

Cable broadband giant Liberty Global has today acquired 1.335 million shares in Vodafone Group PLC, which represents 4.92% of the outstanding share capital (excluding treasury shares). But the operator confirmed that “it is not considering an offer” for the UK based mobile operator and will not seek board representation.
