The government and mobile operators have officially started activating the new UK-wide Emergency Alerts service, which has been designed to warn mobile users if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (e.g. severe flooding, fires and extreme weather). But it will only work on modern 4G and 5G Smartphones.

Sources close to the proposed merger talks between mobile network operators Vodafone and Three UK (CK Hutchison), which could value the combined business at around £15bn, have reportedly indicated that a deal may be announced as soon as before the end of March 2023.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today issued an update on their deployment progress under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which reveals that it has already rolled out 4G (mobile broadband) connectivity across 57 rural locations in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland under the programme.

Uswitch.com has unveiled the winners of their annual 2023 Telecoms Awards event, which among things saw Plusnet named as the best LARGE broadband ISP of the year, while Hyperoptic took the same award for smaller providers. Meanwhile, BT was named as the most reliable broadband ISP and giffgaff came top for mobile.

Mobile operator Talkmobile, which runs off Vodafone’s network as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) partner, has informed us that they’ve had a “complete revamp” of their available 4G and 5G deals. In short, some prices have been reduced, while other plans may benefit from a promotion of “3 months half price“.

British mobile giant Vodafone has done something special. The operator has combined a credit-card sized Raspberry Pi 4 personal computer with a new mobile (mobile broadband) chip to create a portable prototype device, which could enable small businesses and households to setup their own private 5G networks (MPNs).

Ookla, which operates the popular internet Speedtest.net service, has warned that median 5G performance (mobile broadband download speeds) are declining in many early launch markets like the United Kingdom, where speeds fell by -38.26Mbps (Megabits per second) year-on-year.

Cable broadband giant Liberty Global has today acquired 1.335 million shares in Vodafone Group PLC, which represents 4.92% of the outstanding share capital (excluding treasury shares). But the operator confirmed that “it is not considering an offer” for the UK based mobile operator and will not seek board representation.

Mobile operator Vodafone has confirmed that customers using the Notting Hill Gate station on the London Underground have started to receive their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) signal. The tunnels from Holland Park to Queensway (Central Line) and Archway to Kentish Town (Northern Line) will follow by the weekend.

Ofcom has today set out their “expectations” for how they want mobile operators – Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2 (VMO2 / Virgin Media) – to approach the phased switch-off of legacy 2G and 3G mobile services. The goal being to ensure consumers are “treated fairly” and aren’t left cut-off from vital services.

Vodafone UK has published their latest quarterly (Q3 FY23) results, which states that their fixed broadband ISP base saw strong growth to total 1.158 million customers (up by 47k in the quarter vs 39k in Q2 FY23), while their mobile base also grew again to total 17.802 million (up by 259k vs 321k in the previous quarter).

The time has come. Vodafone will, in just a few days’ time, become one of the first UK mobile networks to start the process of switching off their old 3G mobile (mobile broadband) platform, with people in the Devon city of Plymouth and the Hampshire town of Basingstoke being among the first to switch.

The latest Q3 2022 Ofcom survey of UK consumer complaints has, once again, named ISP Shell Energy as attracting the most consumer gripes for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while BT and Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media for Pay TV.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has today published their latest biannual H2 2022 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which once again sees EE (BT) come top of every single ranking category. But Three UK is still delivering the goods in terms of 5G speed.

A new Opinium surveyed of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch and conducted during December 2022, has claimed that 51% of mobile users are unaware that operators are planning to switch-off 3G based data (mobile broadband) services – starting next month – and 25% say they still use it regularly.

Mobile operator Vodafone has confirmed that the first “trial” customers are now able to connect to one of the UK’s first deployments of an ultrafast cloud-based 5G Standalone (SA) network, which has been built across parts of several cities including London, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Bath, Glasgow and Birmingham.
