The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that the final bidders due to take part in their auction of the 26GHz and 40GHz millimetre wave (mmW) bands for faster 5G data (mobile broadband) services will include BT (EE), Telefonica UK (O2 / Virgin Media) and Vodafone (VodafoneThree). No surprises this time around.

Digital infrastructure firm Boldyn Networks has this morning announced that they’ve so far deployed over 200 5G capable small cells across busy parts of London, which can be harnessed by all the major mobile network operators (i.e. Vodafone / Three UK, O2 and EE) to boost their coverage, local capacity and mobile broadband performance.

Telecom giant Vodafone and strategic supplier Nokia have today revealed that they conducted their first real-world trial of “lag-busting” L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput) technology on a “live home broadband fibre [FTTP] connection“. The trial was able to significant reduce the delay (latency) time during gaming and videoconferencing by 94%.

Mobile operator Lebara, which harnesses Vodafone UK’s mobile virtual network operator (mvno) platform, today finally confirmed to ISPreview that they had begun rolling out eSIM (Electronic SIM) support in a phased manner. But initially this will only be available to new customers joining with an Apple iPhone Air, although support will soon expand.

Mobile infrastructure company Cornerstone (CTIL), which was originally established as part of a UK network sharing agreement between O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone (Vantage Towers), has today become the latest network operator to adopt Vyntelligence’s AI technology (Agentic Video Intelligence) to speed up the roll-out of new masts and cut costs.

British-registered mobile operator Vodafone has today published a new white paper with Meta and Google, which shows the benefits of advanced video compression technology, via the AV1 video codec, for Smartphone users on their mobile broadband networks. But it also notes that many people use budget handsets, which often lack full support it.

The London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has announced that customers travelling along a picturesque 45-mile stretch of the line in Northumberland (England) can now access “significantly improved mobile phone and Wi-Fi connectivity“. Mobile operator Vodafone UK (VodafoneThree) has revealed that they intend to switch off their now ancient 2G based mobile network “during 2030“, roughly three years ahead of the government’s official 2033 deadline for the phasing out of both 2G and 3G services (here). The operator has already shut down its 3G network (here).

Mobile operator VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) has this morning announced that they’ve signed two multi-billion-pound and 8-year long partnerships with network technology suppliers Ericsson and Nokia. The deals will see both suppliers provide radios and other cell / core network kit and services for 17,000+ mobile sites across the United Kingdom.

A new study from SignalTracker, which runs a popular Android mobile app (not iOS) for monitoring and examining mobile network performance, has revealed the results of a study into the speed differences between the UK’s primary mobile operators (MNO) and their virtual operator (MVNO) siblings. Unsurprisingly, EE, Vodafone, Three UK and O2 outperformed mvnos.

Consumer magazine Which? has today teamed up with crowdsourced network benchmarking firm Opensignal to produce a new UK map of mobile network quality. The map uses real-world data to create a percentage score for how consistent the signal is in each postcode area in the year to August 2025 – split by EE, O2, Three UK and Vodafone.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has today shared the results from a recent survey they conducted, which tested the mobile broadband coverage and performance of 4G and 5G networks – including EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2 – while travelling along the Midland Main Line (MML) from London to Sheffield in Yorkshire via the East Midlands.

Just a reminder that the UK government will conduct another major nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts service at 3pm tomorrow (Sunday 7th September 2025), which will be sent out via mobile networks to supporting handsets. This is otherwise normally only intended to be used if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (severe flooding, fires and extreme weather etc.).

Global network operator Netmore has today signed a 3-year deal with the UK’s second-largest water company, Severn Trent, to deploy and manage network services for 1 million smart meters across more than 20 counties. This will involve the deployment of a dual wireless Long Range Wide Area (LoRaWAN) and Narrowband-loT (NB-IoT) network.

One of the UK’s largest alternative broadband networks, Netomnia (Substantial Group), has revealed that they’re in the process of joining Openreach’s (BT) network in order to harness their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products in areas where their network doesn’t yet reach or may be unlikely to reach in the future. But the initial reach will be limited.
