Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their “ultrafast” 4G based Mobile Broadband network will reach five of the “largest cities and towns” in the South of England this summer 2014, which will benefit nearly 1 million people and over 35,000 businesses.

RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

Mobile operator Vodafone has signed an exclusive promotional partnership with Internet-based unlimited movie and TV video streaming service Netflix UK, which from July 2014 will give customers of their latest 4G based Mobile Broadband network free access to Netflix’s content.

The latest Q1-2013 (calendar) financial results for Vodafone UK have revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base appears to have stabilised at 59,000 customers (unchanged from the end of 2013), which follows last year’s Q2-2013 fall from 85,000.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced the next batch of locations for their national roll-out of “ultrafast” 4G based Mobile Broadband connectivity, which is now live in 233 large towns and cities across the United Kingdom (we predict they’re currently able to reach around 40% of the UK).

BSkyB (Sky Broadband) has confirmed last week’s report that it has an interest in merging with Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland, which are all broadly owned and controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox (although Murdoch’s stake in BSkyB is just over 39%). But no agreement has “ever been reached“.

Eurotunnel has today confirmed that Le Shuttle and High Speed Train commuters travelling along the Channel Tunnel (North Tunnel) route, which links the UK to France, can now access 2G and 3G based mobile phone and mobile broadband connectivity via EE and Vodafone (O2 will soon follow) thanks to a new fibre optic based GSP-P retransmission system. 4G is coming soon.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that customers of their Red 4G plans (including business travellers) will now also be able to make use of “ultrafast” Mobile Broadband connectivity when roaming across Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Mobile operator Vodafone has boosted their presence in the United Kingdom by another £100 million in order to open 150 new shops and create 1,400 new jobs, which will form part of their annual investment in networks and services that’s currently set to hit £1 billion in 2014. But are they gearing up for something even bigger.

One of the problems with modern pay-as-you-go Mobile Broadband packages is that you get a short expiry time of 30 or 90 days on the data allowance but it didn’t use to be that way. Back in 2008/9 Vodafone launched a dongle (USB Modem) with a “no expiry” period, which many customers have continued to use.. until now.

RootMetrics has today published their H2 2013 Rootscore Report, which uses data collected from 840,000 network and speed tests conducted across the United Kingdom to reveal which mobile operator is best for Internet access, calls and texting. Suffice to say that EE topped the table in all respects, while Vodafone was almost always at the bottom.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today claimed that its new “ultrafast” (ugh the terminology..) 4G based Mobile Broadband network has managed to attract 500,000 customers within the first six months of going live and their network coverage is now reaching 36% of the United Kingdom (population).

Global broadband ISP speed testing outfit Ookla have revamped their Net Index (Speedtest.net) service to include a useful summary of download and upload speeds for Mobile Broadband operators in the United Kingdom (as well as other countries). Interestingly the fastest operator is T-Mobile.

Vodafone UK has reported that its new 4G Mobile Broadband services are now available in 13 cities across the country, attracting 370k subscribers (Q4 2013), and a bigger move into Pay TV is being rumoured. But sadly their fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base has suffered another sharp fall to just 59k users (down from 85k in Q2 2013).

It took a few months but mobile operator Vodafone has finally passed Ofcom’s coverage obligation for 3G based Mobile Broadband coverage, which requires all of the markets major MNOs to provide related network coverage in the 2100MHz band to at least 90% of the UK population.

Global financial services firm UBS has triggered an uplift in BSkyB’s (Sky Broadband) stock price after suggesting that the company could merge its European pay-TV assets to form Sky Europe and or then pick-up a mobile operator by merging O2 (Telefonica UK) or Vodafone UK into their operations.
