Residents living in the tiny North Wales (UK) village of Penmachno in the isolated upland Machno valley area, which has long been known to suffer from flaky mobile coverage, have banded together to tackle the issue by installing a “cutting-edge, free WiFi [mesh] system” in the centre of the community.

Residents in the rural Shropshire (England) village of Brockton (Lydbury North), which sits a few short miles from the town of Bishop’s Castle and is served by a hybrid full fibre (FTTP) and wireless broadband network from Voneus, have for the past month been “plagued with frequent outages and, when it is up, lots of packet loss, essentially making it unusable“.

Fixed wireless and UK broadband provider Connexin UK has signed a new deal that will see their Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) being expanded to connect up to 900,000 of Northumbrian Water‘s smart meters across the North East, which is something they’ve already done in other parts of the country.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today announced a series of improvements to their spectrum sharing framework, which among other things will “significantly increase the availability of spectrum” to help improve the performance and business models of using this to foster new types of 4G, 5G, wireless broadband and mobile services etc.

Liskeard-based alternative network operator and UK ISP Wildanet, which is rolling out a gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband across South West England, has boosted connectivity at Cornwall Airport Newquay by deploying a new “lightning-fast” public WiFi network to replace the previous and somewhat slower service.

A collaboration between IT consultancy firm CGI and the Norfolk County Council (NCC) in England has leveraged a hybrid approach to help bring “ultrafast” broadband speeds to several remote industrial sites in the county, which uses a mix of wireless networking and Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

A recent study from business comparison service Bionic claims to have identified the best and worst UK train line operators for onboard WiFi internet access, which was achieved by analysing negative reviews that mentioned the service. The results suggest that the best operator for WiFi is ScotRail, while the worst came out as Cross Country trains.
