The UK Government’s Minister for Telecoms, Sir Chris Bryant, yesterday held a round table meeting with a small selection of network operators in an effort to try and drive home the need for greater “infrastructure sharing” in order to “end the deployment of unnecessary telegraph poles” when rolling out new gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks.

A new report from the UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (UKWISPA), which was put together by Intelligens Consulting, has claimed that fostering greater use and acceptance of the latest innovations in fixed wireless broadband networks by the government could deliver £4bn of “quantifiable impact” in the UK.

A Silicon Valley company called Airvine has developed a rather unique network bridge that can extend a Local Area Network (LAN) running at multi-Gigabit speeds, seemingly using only WiFi style wireless signals via the 2.4GHz and 6GHz bands, through “up to” 30cm (12″) of solid concrete walls – it can even bend around 90-degree solid concrete corners.

Mobile network operator and UK ISP EE (BT) has today officially taken the wrappings off their new next-generation and Qualcomm powered Wi-Fi 7 router (Smart Hub Pro) and booster (Smart WiFi Pro) for home broadband customers. At the same time, they’ve also formally launched their new 5G Standalone mobile network across 15 of the country’s major cities.

Global network operator Netmore has signed a contract with Yorkshire Water in England that aims to upgrade and connect 1.3 million water meters across the Yorkshire region (i.e. those that are reaching the end of their operation life) to their Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN).

Technology services company Telent and His Majesty’s (HM) Coastguard have today announced that one of the UK’s largest private broadband networks, which connects 163 remote radio sites across 11,000 miles of coastline, is now operational and helping to ensure an effective emergency response for people passing through the country’s waters.

The Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) looks set to start a year-long trial that will upgrade trains on the Far North and Kyle lines (railway) in the Highlands of Scotland with “the best Wi-Fi experience of any train service” in the UK. The capacity for this will be supplied by unspecified broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 1.22% (17.55 million) in Q1 2024 (down from 1.6% in Q3 2023) to end the quarter on a total of 1.45 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK jumped to 7.2% (up from 1.5% in Q3).

Rural alternative network builder and ISP Voneus, which aims to cover 370,000 premises via both their gigabit-capable fixed wireless access (FWA) and full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks, has connected the first customer to their new wireless network on Walney Island in Cumbria (England) – just 8 weeks after they started building (here).

Telecoms regulator Ofcom has today proposed to open the remaining unassigned spectrum in the 32GHz band (32.445-32.571 GHz paired with 33.257-33.383 GHz) for new fixed wireless links, while at the same time rejecting previous interest in using this radio spectrum for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband services.

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has posted an interesting new analysis of broadband affordability in the UK, which identifies the cheapest and most expensive ISPs for “entry level” packages by nationwide “small areas“. Suffice to say that alternative networks dominate the table of cheapest providers.

Fixed wireless and UK broadband provider Connexin UK has signed a new deal that will see their Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) being expanded to connect up to 900,000 of Northumbrian Water‘s smart meters across the North East, which is something they’ve already done in other parts of the country.
