A group of land and property owners, including the British Property Federation (BPF) and National Farmers Union (NFU) among them, have written a new letter that calls on the UK government to suspend earlier reforms that made it easier and cheaper for mobile and broadband operators to deploy their infrastructure on private land.

Fixed wireless access UK ISP Symmetris Broadband, which together with their partners have already deployed a number of networks across rural parts of Norfolk and Suffolk in England (including some FTTP via the Gigabit Village off-shoot), appears to have recently been merged into sister operator WiSpire (both are associated to InTouch Systems).

A few years have passed since the South Western Railway (SWR) announced that it would deploy a new rail-side 5G mast network (here), which aimed to deliver “superfast” onboard WiFi for people travelling on a 70km long stretch of their Main Line into London (between Basingstoke and Earlsfield). But after some delays, the new network is now live.

Alternative network provider Wildanet, which has spent the past few years deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband network across rural parts of Cornwall and Devon in England, has announced plans to conduct a “phased retirement” of their legacy Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network.

Clevedon-based business, student and residential ISP Glide Group, which is separately still busy expanding their full fibre broadband network, has today announced that a recent funding boost from banking giant NatWest has enabled it to start preparing for an “ambitious expansion” of its high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity infrastructure too.

A little over a year has passed since broadband and telecoms giant BT announced a 10-year project, which aimed to convert a further 2,000 of the operator’s legacy payphones and kiosks – across more than 200 UK towns and cities – into smart Street Hubs, starting this year (here). But objections by some local authorities are starting to mount.

The Mobile Infrastructure Forum (MIF), which represents the main providers of mobile network infrastructure for EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK (i.e. Cellnex UK, Cornerstone, MBNL and WIG), has today called on the government to resolve the issue of 6,200 UK sites (masts etc.) that are “stuck in legislative limbo” and preventing 5G upgrades.

Scottish train operator ScotRail has today announced that they’ve launched a new 6-month trial alongside communications provider Clarus Networks, which will extend their Starlink (satellite) based broadband upgrade of onboard WiFi – this is to include six class 158 trains that travel along their Highlands routes in Scotland.

Mobile operator Three UK has notified the remaining customers still on their old Relish Wireless (Three Broadband) service in Swindon (Wiltshire, England), which was originally acquired from UK Broadband Limited in 2017 (here), that it is finally due to be retired by the end of May 2025. But the news came as a surprise to some users.

Ofcom has today published its Spring 2025 update on UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) lines now reach 74% of homes (up from 69% in July 2024), while 86% are within reach of a gigabit network (up from 83%) and 62-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal (up from 61-79%).

New research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 0.91% or 13.5 million in Q4 2024 (down from 1.44% in Q3 2024) to total 1.5 billion connections. The subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks also remained strong in the UK at 11.7%, putting us just two places behind the leading countries for growth.

Fixed wireless and UK broadband provider Connexin, which is backed by PATRIZIA and is in the process of being acquired by CityFibre (here), has today signed a new agreement with Southend-on-Sea city council to install their Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) wireless network on existing infrastructure across the city. This will support smart water meters, without the need for new poles.

Telecoms giant BT has today signed a new “multi-million-pound” deal with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which will see EE provide 34,000 mobile connections to support workers and real-time reporting on issues from flooding to farming disease outbreaks across England, Scotland and Wales.

Over the past few days’, we’ve seen a succession of scaremongering newspaper articles, which appear to warn UK consumers that their wireless routers or broadband may “grind to a halt” during this week’s heatwave. The articles appear to have been triggered by some advice that Virgin Media issued, but the reality is that this week’s weather won’t cause any major broadband issues.

UK ISP BT has published their first biannual progress update for 2025 on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat maligned 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,411 premises (up from 8,248 in Oct 2024), with 349 further builds in-progress (up from 215).

Online shopping giant Amazon last night succeeded in launching their first batch of 27 ultrafast broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for Project Kuiper. The platforms were put into space by a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 551 rocket that unleashed some 2.7 million pounds (12 megaNewtons) of thrust.
