The Senior Network Support Officer for Powys County Council (PCC) in Wales, Mark Baylis, has launched the Radnor Broadband Campaign to help bring faster wireless internet (wifi) connectivity to digitally isolated parts of rural Radnorshire.

Grants are being offered to help connect homes, which is despite some initial funding woes.

The tiny civil parish village of Cowesby (Hambleton) in North Yorkshire UK can now access broadband speeds of up to 25Mbps after community network developer CLANNET Broadband made use of the local St Michael and All Angels Church to expand the coverage of its wireless network. Other villages will also benefit.

Telecoms operator BT has today announced the completion of its plan to deploy 500,000 wireless hotspots (wifi), each offering internet access across Greater London, for the 2012 Olympic Games. The move was made possible after the operator added a batch of new hotspots along 27 miles of the River Thames.

Greentomatocars has allegedly become the first minicab firm in Europe to deploy a free wireless internet (wifi) service across its entire fleet of 300 energy efficient hybrid taxis in London (England). Separately the Alton Towers Resort, which is one of the UK’s biggest theme parks, has deployed a similar service.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has today confirmed that several UK broadband providers, including BT, Sky Broadband (BSkyB), Everything Everywhere (Orange UK and T-Mobile), TalkTalk and Telefonica (O2), have all agreed to help trial the next generation of WiFi Hotspot (NGH) technology in Q4 2012.
