Alternative network provider Wessex Internet (M12 Solutions), which offers a mix of fibre optic and fixed wireless based superfast broadband services to rural parts of North Dorset, South Wiltshire and East Somerset in England, has now covered 119 villages in the region.
The ISP, which recently won the “Best Wireless” gong at the annual 2016 ISPA Awards (here), is currently in the process of expanding their coverage around the village of North Cheriton. Similarly they’re also mooting the possibility of a roll-out to Milton-on-Stour, Sandley, Leigh Common, Redlynch, Penselwood and various other locations.

The provider, which connected their 500th customer in February 2015 and then doubled this to around 1,000 in March 2016 (900 homes and 100 businesses), has clearly seen some good growth over the past couple of years and they’re now aiming to connect around 1,800 subscribers by the end of 2016.
Prices tend to start from £25 per month for a 30Mbps (1Mbps upload) package with a 40GB usage allowance (£199 for one-off installation) on their fixed wireless network, with faster packages and larger usage allowances also being available. The Points of Presence (PoPs) for this network tend to be installed on hillsides and tall buildings, which help to distribute the signal.
Wessex Internet also has a pure fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network, with prices starting from £35 per month for a 100Mbps (10Mbps upload) package and a 60GB usage allowance. Once again, faster and more flexible packages are available (the installation cost varies, depending upon your location).
Some areas, such as those where BT and the state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK programme have no plans to upgrade, can also benefit from a cheaper connection to Wessex Internet’s network through the Government’s “2Mbps for all” Universal Service Commitment (USC) subsidy scheme.
