The Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency and Openreach (BT) have revised downward their £149.7m Call Off 1 Project Gigabit contract – covering parts of Lancashire, North Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, West and Mid-Surrey, Staffordshire, West Berkshire and Hertfordshire. This originally aimed to extend full fibre (FTTP) to 54,336 premises in remote areas, but will now reach 51,821.

Alternative broadband provider Wildanet, which has built a new full fibre (FTTP) network across rural parts of South West England, have today issued a full statement to better explain their reasoning for recently withdrawing from two of the Government’s publicly funded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts in Cornwall.

The Government’s recently published Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for telecommunications (here) appears to have rejected calls by some, but not all, alternative UK broadband networks for Ofcom to make access to run new fibre optic cables via Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts and poles cheaper in rural areas.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has published their February 2026 update on the delivery progress of contracts that have been awarded under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The update reveals that some 215,380 contracted premises (up from 202,270 in Jan 2026) have so far been covered out of a planned total of 1,023,310.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has today published the latest Q4 2025 progress report on their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The data reveals that some 1.37 million premises have now received coverage from BDUK’s gigabit programmes since their inception, albeit only 177,840 via Project Gigabit’s GIS contracts (up from 131,090 in Nov 2025).

The recently launched virtual mobile operator (mvno) for the Channel Islands, Coop Mobile, has complained to the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) that rival operator JT has been disrupting the ability of consumers to switch to Coop’s service by preventing them from being able to keep their existing mobile number as part of the process.

The CEO of Carlisle-based altnet broadband ISP Grain, Richard Cameron, has written a new open letter to Liz Kendall MP, the UK Government’s Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, in order to highlight the “shameful” price hike practices of their rivals, which he says will not be resolved by the new Telecoms Consumer Charter.

Abingdon-based broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has so far built their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 612,000 premises (inc. 160,000 customers) across rural England, have modified their Project Gigabit roll-out contract for South Oxfordshire (Lot 13.01) – reducing its coverage target from c.5,500 to 5,034 premises and public subsidy from £17.04m to £15.49m.

The UK Prime Minister, Kier Starmer, has today proposed last minute amendments to two Bills that will enable the Government to set a minimum age limit for social media (i.e. greater use of Age Verification), as well as options to age restrict or limit children’s use of Virtual Private Networks (VPN), where it “undermines safety protections and changing the age of digital consent“.

Alternative broadband provider Wildanet, which has built a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of Cornwall and Devon in South West England, has today become the latest altnet to withdraw from some of the Government’s publicly funded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contracts, this time in Cornwall.

Consultancy firm FarrPoint has published their fourth annual (2026) survey of digital leaders at councils across England, Scotland and Wales. The results reveal that expanding the coverage of gigabit broadband remains the top priority for most local authorities, just as it was last year. But ensuring better digital inclusion, a key aim of the current government, has now also become a priority.

The Government has managed to get some of the UK’s biggest broadband and phone providers, including BT, Virgin Media (O2), VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK), Sky (Sky Broadband) and TalkTalk, to sign-up to a new Telecoms Consumer Charter that pledges to “stop unexpected bill increases“. But sadly, it’s not an end to mid-contract prices hikes.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has today opened a call for evidence to support their new ‘Mobile Market Review‘, which aims to ensure that their policy and regulatory frameworks are updated to support investment, innovation, competition and consumers. The review could help to boost the rollout of fast 5G and future 6G mobile broadband networks.

The Scottish Government (SG) has officially relaunched their proposed gigabit broadband roll-out procurement for Fife, Perth and Kinross. The proposed contract is valued at £28,557,891 excluding VAT and aims to help expand such a network to cover an estimated total number of 17,830 premises in hard-to-reach areas (i.e. those not covered by any other gigabit networks).

The UK Space Agency has today awarded contracts to three companies to investigate the possibility of producing advanced materials in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which includes one project (SkyYield) that aims to design a payload to process ZBLAN fluoride glass in microgravity (i.e. a specialist optical fibre that can transmit light with up to 100 times less signal loss than traditional silica fibre).
