Gigaclear Expands 1Gbps Broadband to 4,000 Hertfordshire UK Homes

Friday, Nov 6th, 2015 (12:13 pm) - Score 1,422

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has today unveiled a new £4 million plan that will expand the commercial coverage of their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 4,000 homes and businesses in parts of rural Hertfordshire (England).

The commercial deployment will begin in the village of Hunsdon and after that the surrounding areas of Much Hadham, High Wych, Eastwick, Allen’s Green, Perry Green, Green Tye, Widford and Gilston Park will also see some benefit.

The state aid fuelled Connected Counties project is currently working predominantly with BTOpenreach to deploy “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to cover 98% of the county by June 2018, although Gigaclear’s roll-out will be separate from that one.

Matthew Hare, CEO of Gigaclear, said:

We fully support the Connected Counties rollout, and BDUK plans to connect 95 per cent of the UK to superfast broadband by the end of 2017, but the rollout of this scheme won’t reach everyone. By making a commercial investment in the region, Gigaclear will be able to turn some of the most difficult to reach communities in Hertfordshire into the best-connected broadband areas in the world.”

Mark Prisk, MP for Hertford and Stortford, said:

I welcome the announcement from Gigaclear of an alternative for people in East Herts who can’t get broadband through the Connected Counties programme. It’s so important that people in more remote areas aren’t left behind in this digital age.”

At this stage the details are still a bit thin, although we’re informed that the first phase of Gigaclear’s engineering work is officially due to start in early 2016. Residents and businesses are also being encouraged to register their interest in Gigaclear’s ultrafast broadband from at www.gigaclear.com/registerme.
