SSE Telecoms Adds 33 PoPs to Phase 2 of its UK Fibre Optic Network

Wednesday, Nov 25th, 2015 (10:42 am) - Score 1,164

Network infrastructure developer SSE Telecoms has started Phase 2 of their ‘Project Edge’ network expansion, which should make their up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable “enterprise-class” fibre optic network available to more businesses across the United Kingdom.

At present the operator already has 232 Points of Presence (PoP) on their 13,700km UK-wide fibre network and the new phase will add a further 33 BT Telephone Exchanges to that list (see below), which means that another 50,000 “prime city centre business postcodes” will be added to their existing coverage of 200,000.

The expansion will help to make SSE Enterprise Telecoms a more compelling Ethernet provider for service providers that require connectivity to multiple locations up and down the country.

Indeed it’s easy to see why they’re making the investment, especially after reporting a 250% annual increase in orders for related Ethernet services.

Colin Sempill, SSEs Managing Director of Enterprise Telecoms, said:

Our most recent network expansion initiatives have focused on adding 31 commercial data centres in London and Manchester that can deliver 1Gb and 10Gb waves in a week. Edge 2 will see us invest once again in national Ethernet services, to meet the clear demand for high quality Ethernet connectivity across the nation revealed by Edge 1.

By extending our core network capability to an additional 33 exchanges as part of Edge 2, our customers will now have even greater access to our high quality Ethernet and unique, best-of-breed service.”

This latest network investment will see their network expand to exchanges in Aberdeen Denburn, Aylesbury, Birmingham Midland, Bolton, Bradford, Chelmsford, Cheltenham, Colchester, Darlington, Doncaster, Edinburgh Waverly, Farnborough, Glasgow Douglas, Gloucester, Harrogate, High Wycombe, Inverness, Ipswich, Leicester Montford, Lincoln, Loughborough, Maidstone, Newcastle, Norwich, Oldham, Oxford, Peterborough, Rochdale, Sheffield Attercliffe, Sheffield, Stockton, Wokingham and York.
