Shropshire ISP Secure Web Services Plan Gigabit Wireless Boost

Fixed wireless broadband UK ISP Secure Web Services, which currently offers a “superfast broadband” network at speeds of up to 30Mbps (5Mbps upload) across some rural parts of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Powys, has stated that they’re planning to upgrade their network to offer “gigabit broadband” (1Gbps+) for homes.

The proposal came to light as part of SWSs request for Code Powers from Ofcom, which can help to speed-up the deployment of new networks and cut costs by reducing the number of licenses needed for related street works across the United Kingdom.

According to the request, SWS plan to “upgrade its FWA network to support gigabit broadband services, and also expand its network to serve new areas.” The upgrade would require wireless aggregation points to be deployed “much closer to end-users” than has hitherto been the case, and the expansion would also require “additional wireless aggregation points.”

Apparently SWS also intends to make use of Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts and telegraph poles (Physical Infrastructure Access), at least where it makes sense to do so, in order to deploy its own equipment and fibre optic backhaul links for the capacity supply. No further details were revealed.
