Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today published their first ‘Internet Insights‘ report, which is a quarterly analysis of the provider’s network data with bitesize insights about internet usage trends in the UK. For example, between July 2019 and June 2020 customers of their FTTP packages increased their usage by 108%.

The Internet Insightsreport” itself is actually more of an infographic, which doesn’t offer much detail or context for some of its figures. Nevertheless, the first report reveals that internet usage among over 75s has increased 43% year-on-year, with usage rising monthly since lockdown.

On average, over 75s now consume more than 50GB (GigaBytes) of data a month per person. Separate data from TalkTalk’s partner, Foresight Factory, suggests that the older generations are now spending more time posting on social media, streaming music and online dating than in previous years. Sadly though we don’t get similar GB figures for other age groups or packages. Likewise there’s very little info. on application use.

Elsewhere Wales saw the biggest increase (54%) in internet usage over the year to June 2020, while Scotland (46%) and Northern Ireland (43%) saw the smallest rise (most of England saw increases of between 49% to 53%). Overall, usage across TalkTalk’s network has broadly increased, although it’s worth noting that even in a normal year we’d expect to see a strong upward trend in usage (a comparison with prior years would have been useful, but isn’t offered).

Having terrible problems trying to resolve no internet with talk talk.
Almost impossible to get thru to technical dept and the get conflicting messages about the cut situation.
No internet now for 8 days and still no clearer on resolution.
Only straight answer is to inform me it will cost £130 to cancel or to stay in current situation for a further 22 days
Very very poor communication and no customer service.

You tried their online “run live test” in help and support section? Whenever I had any problem with them, I just run live test and if any problem detects (like no Internet in your case) they automatically arrange engineer visit and resolve the issue.

Talktalk absolutely the worst customer service I have ever encountered. Little to no internet for over 6 months. Every time I asked for an engineer to come out I was informed it would cost me £100. Until one call where I was informed the cost of £100 was IF the fault was inside my property (Which I knew it wasn’t). Turned out I was correct, a faulty wire on the telephone pole out my neighbours backdoor was to blame. So when I got no reduction in my bill for the weeks I had no service I tried to leave…And that’s when I had to get Ofcom involved as they would just pass me around whenever I called to cancel the contract. Took over 1 week and multiple calls from me and a nasty email or two from Ofcom to leave. Never again!

I have been with Talktalk for many years. My contract ends in December. I have tried to get Fttp. I am told i get fiber but only to a box not into the house. A pole with fiber is in the bottom of my garden. I will leave if I don’t get connected before my contract ends.

I am currently trying to get ‘fibre to the home’ or ‘full fibre’ as it is called elsewhere. I am getting an average of 12 MBps and plenty of drop out during the day. My next door neighbour has ‘fibre to the home’ through BT and gets 300 MBps. I am trying to get Talktalk to provide the same as the cables are sitting outside my house. No luck so far. I am a long suffering TT customer whose life has probably been considerably shortened by many frustrating calls to TT customer services.
