Calix, a supplier of communications equipment, has today announced that its E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) will be used by a new £40m housing project in Derwenthorpe (Yorkshire, UK) to help supply over 540 homes with fibre optic (FTTP) broadband ISP speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second (1Gbps).
The new service, which will also offer advanced television (IRS) and VoIP products, will be run by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust. It’s stated that the Derwenthorpe project will take advantage of the high-capacity of the E7-2, which has the ability to “support up to 48 subscribers over point-to-point GE in each modular chassis to residences and business locations such as office parks and high density commercial areas“.

Nigel Ingram, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, said:
“Broadband services, especially the kind of high bandwidth services that fibre can offer, are extremely powerful for communities such as Derwenthorpe – they open up boundless possibilities for community living, creating a rich mix of work, leisure and residential services in one place. They are a key economic enabler and a significant part of this housing concept. We expect to replicate this concept in other communities in and around York.”
Sadly the press release doesn’t say much beyond a lengthy piece of technical spin, although apparently Fibre Options will be the “value-added-reseller” / access network solution provider. Fibre Options will “design and implement the network, delivering services to every home over fibre“.
