Welshpool-based ISP eXwavia has announced that the large rural communities of Llanrug and Bethel in Gwynedd (Wales) can now benefit from wireless superfast broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps (Megabits per second).
It’s important to note that the top speed of 100Mbps is only available to business customers, while home connections go up to a maximum of 16Mbps with “unlimited downloads” (Fair Usage Policy) and that will set you back a hefty £46 a month. The cheapest home package is priced at £20 a month but only delivers 4Mbps.

Sion Jones, Councillor for Bethel, said:
“We live in such a rural area of Wales where broadband is extremely slow, so I am very much looking forward to the residents getting this new service.
There has been a huge demand for it and hopefully it will boost local businesses back in the community.”
Annette Burgess, Managing Director of eXwavia, added:
“eXwavia is doing more than simply delivering superfast broadband to subscribers; free hotspots for key community buildings; no ‘up to’ speeds (speed ordered is the speed received); and no reliance on copper phone lines or costly fibre installations.
It’s fabulous to work closely with communities such as Llanrug and Bethel, and whilst government targets are ambitious, I am determined not to make rural communities wait until 2015 to achieve superfast speeds.”
It’s worth pointing out that the installation price for eXwavia’s service can also be extremely expensive, although homes and businesses can often mitigate this by seeking a grant from the Welsh Government’s (WG) £2m strong Broadband Support Scheme.
The BSS offers grants worth up to £1,000 for residents and businesses (per property) who live in parts of Wales where either no broadband or only sub-2Mbps (Megabits per second) internet connection speeds are available.
