The City of London Corporation has claimed to be “the first global financial centre” to offer a “comprehensive” free wireless internet service to everyone after they extended their partnership with The Cloud (BSkyB) by making the existing public wifi network available on an “unlimited” instead of restricted basis.
The result is that around 400,000 local workers, 10,000 residents and 5 million annual visitors to London’s Square Mile will have access to unlimited wifi connectivity via 15,000 hotspots (access points), which stretches from St Paul’s Cathedral to The Gherkin.

Mark Boleat, Policy Chairman at the City of London Corporation, said:
“As the world’s leading global financial and business centre, the City of London has one of the biggest concentrations of smartphones in the UK so having the best communications infrastructure in place to access vital information on the move is of critical importance. This partnership between the City of London Corporation and The Cloud will ensure that the Square Mile keeps pace with growing demand in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.”
The Cloud first converted the Square Mile into a single WiFi hotspot in 2007, although until now the free access period was restricted to just 15 minutes and after that you had to adopt a paid solution. By comparison the new network is now “unlimited” for everybody.
