The incumbent telecoms provider for Hull in East Yorkshire (England), KC, has revealed the next batch of locations that will gain access to its superfast fibre optic (FTTH and FTTC) based Lightstream broadband service during the first half of 2013, which is perhaps incorrectly described as the “UK’s fastest fibre service“.
So far the new connectivity has already been made available to 15,000 premises in Hull and around 3,500 have subscribed to the service, which offers speeds of up to 350Mbps (Megabits per second) via its top-end Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) solution (up to 80Mbps on slower FTTC).

It’s understood that the service is now set to become available at a further 2,000 premises in spring 2013, which includes homes and businesses in Victoria Dock from May 2013 and Swanland, including streets around the Hessle Road area, from June 2013. In total KC Lightstream will be rolled out to another 15,000 properties during 2013.

Ultimately KC aims to reach around 45,000 homes and businesses in East Yorkshire by March 2015, although they’re certainly not the “UK’s fastest fibre service” (it might be correct if that said “Hull’s fastest HOME fibre service“).
In terms of home solutions then Hyperoptic, CityFibre or B4RN, not to mention many other niche fibre ISPs, might rightly claim to be the fastest given that most offer speeds or boosts of up to 1000Mbps. On the other hand none of them are providing a UK-wide service.
Still KC claims a study by consumer website uSwitch last year found that residents of Poplars Way in Beverley, where more than half the houses on the street have Lightstream installed, enjoy the “fourth fastest broadband speeds in the UK” and receive an average download speed of 64.28Mbps.

It’s important to note that this announcement is just for the next few areas. More areas in various locations across KC’s network will be announced in due course to cover the rest of 2013 and beyond.
