Software giant Microsoft has moved to promote its new business applications and software. The firm has teamed up with various companies to offer a free wireless internet (wifi) service across hundreds of specially branded taxi cabs in London and at a number of national train stations.
As part of this effort Microsoft has teamed up with Track4Services and Ubiquitous Taxis to bring free wifi to a network of 225 specially branded cabs across London for a period of three months. It’s understood that Microsoft will also add its branding to the related wifi portal, which forms part of the overall CabConnect service.

Philippa Snare, CMO of Microsoft UK, said:
“London continues to be an important city for global business, providing effective solutions for hardworking people has always been a key focus for us. Offering free Wi-Fi during a taxi journey is a great way to demonstrate how Microsoft provides benefit to people in London.
Additionally, there’s the opportunity for passengers to explore our mobile hub during their journey, via their smartphone, which is full of information that could be useful to their everyday tasks.”
Microsoft has also joined forces with The Cloud (BSkyB) to make “unlimited” free wifi available at “selected” Network Rail train stations across the United Kingdom for one month (normally the service is only free for the first 15 minutes of use).
The deal includes branded advertising on the WiFi landing pages in First Great Western, London Overground and Greater Anglia stations. Sadly the press release doesn’t mention which stations are involved.
