The WiSpire network, which works with the Diocese of Norwich and ISP FreeClix to roll-out wireless internet connectivity by installing wifi transmitters on top of church spires, has expanded its network coverage to four more villages in rural Norfolk (England, UK).
Sites in Loddon, Bergh Apton, Ashby St Mary and Barnham Broom have now gone live and are supplying the surrounding communities with broadband download speeds of up to 8Mbps (Megabits per second) and “unlimited” usage. Prices start at £13 per month (£59 to install) for an entry-level 4Mbps (0.5Mbps uploads) package that includes a small usage allowance of 2GB on a 30 day contract.

“Once we have put a church “online” the whole community can take advantage of high speed broadband and experience not just faster browsing but the many applications the internet has to offer.”
Admittedly the speeds of up to 8Mbps aren’t particularly fast but then the service is designed to cover areas where sub-0.5Mbps from BT or no connectivity at all can be a reality. A further 12 sites are also due to be installed over the coming weeks, although they haven’t been named.
