The long awaited SmartCall service from cable ISP Virgin Media UK, which allows Smartphone users with a Virgin Phone Line to use the unlimited calls from their talk plan on their mobile (so long as you have a wireless internet connection), should finally surface “later this year“.
The product, which was first announced during early November 2012 (here), had originally been intended to launch in “early 2012” but sadly that never happened and this left many customers to speculate over the services fate. But thankfully it hasn’t been scrapped.

A spokesperson for Virgin Media told ISPreview.co.uk that the operator “simply had other priorities” (the Liberty Global merger perhaps?) and that SmartCall is already being used by “a good number of customers” (i.e. the closed trial). However the delay has allowed BT to catch-up with its own imaginatively titled SmartTalk (BTSmartTalk) service (here).
