Netflix UK‘s unlimited movie and TV video streaming service has released its latest monthly Netflix ISP Speed Index update for June 2013, which is designed to reveal which ISPs deliver “the best streaming experience“. Suffice to say that not a lot has changed since earlier this year and Virgin Media remains top.
The Netflix Speed Index ratings reflect the average performance of all Netflix video streams on each ISP and should thus not be taken as a measure of general end-user internet connectivity speed or capability. It might help you decide whether one ISP is better for using with Netflix than another, although realistically there’s not a lot of difference between them.

Major Netflix UK ISP Rankings (Video Streaming Speed in Megabits)
1 – Virgin Media 2.57Mbps (up from 2.37Mbps in Feb 2013)
2 – BT 2.36Mbps (up from 2.25Mbps in Feb 2013)
3 – O2 2.30Mbps (up from 2.23Mbps in Feb 2013)
4 – Sky Broadband 2.22Mbps (up from 2.10Mbps in Feb 2013)
5 – EE 2.19Mbps (up from 1.77Mbps in Feb 2013)
6 – TalkTalk 2.17Mbps (up from 2.04Mbps in Feb 2013)
Sadly Netflix only includes results from the country’s largest ISPs and the scores change so little that we only see any merit in conducting a biannual update on the data. According to Netflix, “these relative rankings are a good indicator of the consistent performance typically experienced across all users on an ISP network.”
It’s worth remembering that Netflix streaming speeds can be affected by all sorts of factors, such as the dynamic nature of different video codecs, wifi performance, ISP traffic management and the choice of different video quality options (e.g. HD).
