Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their “ultrafast” 4G based Mobile Broadband network will reach five of the “largest cities and towns” in the South of England this summer 2014, which will benefit nearly 1 million people and over 35,000 businesses.
The latest five areas to benefit include Basingstoke, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Reading and Southampton, which should all be ready to enable 4G sometime “later this summer“. Overall Vodafone are currently spending £1bn this year to roll-out the new service, which aims to cover 98% of the UK population by the end of 2015.

Fergal Kelly, CTO of Vodafone UK, said:
“Mobile connectivity plays a vital role in keeping communities in touch and helping to support the local economy. Our network improvements will ensure thousands of businesses and hundreds of thousands of consumers in the south of England will have a better opportunity to take part in the growing smartphone revolution, whether they are at work, at home or on holiday.”
It’s good to see Vodafone, which last year spent £804m to acquire a big slice of the necessary 2.6GHz and 800MHz radio spectrum bands for their 4G (LTE) network (here), keeping us informed about their on-going roll-out. Recent tests (example) have shown the beginnings of a strong improvement in the operators Mobile Broadband performance and hopefully this will only get better going forwards.
