A new RootMetrics study finds that mobile operator EE has beaten Vodafone, O2 and Three UK to be crowned the fastest and most reliable Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) provider for the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Leicester in England during the first half of 2014.
Sadly RootMetrics continue to combine both 3G and 4G performance, from around 25,000 tests conducted in each city, into a single result and this naturally benefits EE’s more mature 4G platform. In other words, take the outcome with a pinch of salt.

But the good news is that we can now get access to the raw upload and download results in Megabits per second (Mbps) again. For example, EE came top for all three but their fastest result occurred in Birmingham with median download speeds of 23.8Mbps and uploads of 16.9Mbps.
It’s worth considering that upload performance on mobile networks is already superior to many mass market fixed line ADSL connections, except the best NGA lines. If only mobile operators could match the usage allowances of fixed line services then we could see many more consumers in urban areas scrapping their fixed lines and going mobile.
