Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has begun construction of a new 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) based broadband network for approximately 1,500 premises in the rural Peterborough (England) villages of Ashton, Bainton, Barnack, Helpston, Pilsgate, Southorpe, Tallington and Ufford.
The ISP first talked about the possibility of such a deployment, which could leverage backhaul capacity from CityFibre’s £30m Peterborough CORE platform (here), in the area last June 2014 (here) and since then enough demand from local homes and businesses has been secured in order for the project to proceed.
Matthew Hare, CEO of Gigaclear, said:
“Peterborough villages, welcome to the future! We’re thrilled by the level of enthusiasm shown by the local community here and look forward to future-proofing more communities in Cambridgeshire. Ultrafast, pure fibre networks are the way forward to safeguard everyone’s ability to communicate, work and play, and for these villages they’ll be taking advantage of this capability in just a few months’ time.”
Marco Cereste, Leader of Peterborough City Council, added:
“This project, supported by Peterborough City Council and local broadband groups, shows what can be achieved when residents and commercial organisations work effectively together. This initiative will transform the connectivity of these villages bringing it truly into the 21st Century without requiring any funding from the council. We are delighted that this project has moved to being able to be installed this quickly.”
It’s understood that the first phase of Gigaclear’s build will begin in the villages of Ufford, Southorpe and portions of Barnack this month. The operator anticipates total completion by June 2015.
