Post Office Confirms UK Line Rental and Broadband Price Hikes

Thursday, Jul 28th, 2016 (9:56 am) - Score 1,072

Once again the Post Office has announced a series of annual price hikes for their broadband and phone services, which will be introduced from 5th September 2016 (the last increase was on the 9th November 2015, so it’s now two hikes within a single year).

One of the most interesting changes this time around appears to be that the Post Office has stopped selling their bog standard “Essential” broadband product, which came attached to a meagre 10GB usage allowance. In other words they now appear to be encouraging new subscribers to take their unlimited “Premium” service as the only option.

Otherwise it seems as if all the main services, with a few exceptions, are going to suffer from the hike. For example, Standard Line Rental will jump from £16 to £16.99 per month and the Broadband Premium service will suffer a +£2 per month increase to £10.

Broadband

Current Price New Price
Broadband Essential with Home Phone (£21/month)
£5/month + £16 line rental
(£23.99/month)
£7/month + £16.99 line rental
Broadband Premium with Home Phone (£24/month)
£8/month + £16 line rental
(£26.99/month)
£10/month + £16.99 line rental
Broadband Essential only £22/month £25/month
Broadband Premium only £25/month £28/month

However we should say that the Post Office’s line rental is still a bit cheaper than most of the big boys and they also give you a free paper billing as standard. Otherwise Ofcom’s mid-contract price hikes rule means that anybody who wishes to escape their contract penalty free should now be able to do so, but don’t forget that all of the major ISPs will be putting their prices up.
