It’s been three years since Hyperoptic first began to deploy their 1Gbps fibre optic (FTTP/B) broadband network around the city of Manchester and today the ISP has announced that over 100 housing developments are now live, with a further 60 set to follow over the next six months.
The provider’s Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) network is urban focused and so tends to cater for big office blocks or large apartment buildings (i.e. those with at least 50 units), although they have also recently branched out to cover a few housing estates and social housing areas. Some examples of the buildings they’ve connected in Manchester include Beetham Tower, the Hat Box, Greengate, The Assembly (Cambridge Street) and X1 Eastbank.
A recent survey of 500 Manchester residents found that slow broadband speeds at peak-times were the number one unexpected home-mover bugbear, which is naturally an area that Hyperoptic hope to correct with their ultrafast speeds.

Kevin Peel, Manchester City Councillor, said:
“I’m delighted that after working to bring gigabit connectivity to Manchester city centre back in 2014, Hyperoptic is now available in thousands of properties throughout the city and other providers are now following. Access to high speed broadband is essential for local residents and we hope to see it available to every building within the city centre in the near future.”
Tim Huxtable, Hyperoptic’s National Team Manager, added:
“We have invested millions of pounds into our full fibre infrastructure in Manchester to give its residents and businesses access to a superior broadband experience. This is the difference between between night and day when compared with other part fibre services. In today’s digital world you need to have connectivity that you can rely upon. Buffering, peak time slowdowns and distance issues just cease to exist with our full fibre solution.”
The provider’s network, which aspires to cover over 500,000 UK “homes” by the end of 2019, is also present in London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, Bristol, Reading, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham, Newcastle, Nottingham, Brighton, Portsmouth, Watford, Leicester, Southampton, Slough, Edinburgh and Woking. Not to mention various social housing agreements in locations like Thurrock (Essex).
Aside from a few bespoke packages that are unique to specific developments, customers are able to choose from either a broadband and phone bundle or a broadband-only service on a 12 month contract (the latter attracts a £40 one-off connection fee). You can also get a “no contract” option of both, although the monthly price is +£2-£4 higher.
All of Hyperoptic’s packages include unlimited usage, 24/7 support, an included wireless router and a dynamic IP address (CGNAT) or £5 for a Static IP.
