The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has opened public nominations for this year’s ‘Internet Hero‘ category, which will form part of their 2018 awards event that is due to be held at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on the 12th July 2018.
Last year Marcus Hutchins of the @Malwaretechblog picked up the ‘Hero‘ award for finding the WannaCry killswitch and President Erdogan took home the title of ‘Villain‘ for cracking down on online freedoms in Turkey.
Sadly the ISPA has decided to scrap the ‘Villain’ award for 2018 and we’re trying to find out why (it was always one of the more interesting categories), although perhaps it ruffled a few too many feathers. In our view the ‘Villain’ award had much more of a positive impact than the ‘Hero’ one, which it achieved by raising awareness of bad practices.

This year we suspect that people will probably nominate individuals or organisations around topics such as GDPR, cyber security and new Age Verification procedures (i.e. restricting access to porn sites) etc. Mind you we’re not sure how many heroes can be found in that bunch but there are plenty of other options.
As usual your nominations can be submitted to the ISPA via email (awards@ispa.org.uk) or via twitter (@ISPAUK) using the hashtag #InternetHero. The ISPA will be taking nominations up until 31st May 2018.
