Virgin Media UK Appoints Regional Director for Northern Ireland

Thursday, May 30th, 2019 (12:28 pm) - Score 1,243

Cable broadband and TV operator Virgin Media has today appointed Seamus McCorry to be the Regional Director for its on-going Project Lightning network expansion programme in Northern Ireland. The network currently covers more than 320,000 premises in the region and reaches 98% of Belfast (where it has an office of 100 people).

Back in 2017 the operator announced that they intended to cover an additional 50,000 premises in Northern Ireland (here), although today’s announcement notes that their £65m+ investment has so far reached a total of 100,000 extra premises since 2015 (seemingly using the same pot of investment).

Residents and businesses in Bangor, Newtownards, Portadown, Craigavon, Ballyclare, Comber, Derry, Maghermason and Eglinton have all also been connected to Virgin Media’s ultrafast network in recent years. Some 11,000 premises in Carrickfergus will be the next town to benefit when it is connected later in 2019 (details), with further towns to follow.

Seamus McCorry said:

“I’m delighted to have taken this new role and am looking forward to building on Virgin Media’s strong presence in Northern Ireland. We’ve got exciting plans to continue the rollout of our gigabit-capable network to more residents and businesses which will help improve connectivity for customers.”

McCorry is currently the Country Manager for Virgin Media Business in Northern Ireland and he is expected to continue in that role at the same time as doing his new one. His role will also see him work closely with the Northern Ireland Assembly, local authorities and business representative organisations.
