Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has today announced that they’ve completed the rollout of their 500Mbps+ capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based DOCSIS / RFoG broadband and phone network to cover 4,000 extra homes in the Gorton area of Manchester.
As it stands today Virgin has built a network that covers 714,000 premises across the metropolitan region and 94,000 of those have been added since 2015 as part of their national Project Lightning network expansion, which aims to add an additional 3-4 million premises to their UK coverage (so far they’ve completed over 1.7 million).
Other than Gorton, Virgin has also been busy working around the Hurst, Hyde, Littleborough, Bury, Cowlishaw and Didsbury areas of Manchester.

Angeliki Stogia, City Councillor for Digital Infrastructure, said:
“It cannot be underestimated how important connectivity is today as we rely more and more on digital technology in our everyday life, education and work. So it’s fantastic to see the role out of ultra-fast broadband across the Gorton community, which will have an undeniable benefit for residents and businesses alike.”
End.
They are also just completing another couple of thousand of homes in Redmill, East Whitburn and East Main Street and surrounding areas in Whitburn, West Lothian
They are doing a massive roll out in West Lothian area
When’s the new modem coming out?
Can’t wait for Gigabit!
Pilot later this year, wider rollout next.
Gigabit really isn’t that transformative. I’ve 750Mb down, 55Mb up at the moment and haven’t noticed much difference beyond on speed tests.
Little ahead of the applications though more bandwidth is always a bonus.
They still don’t cover all of hulme. i have been waiting since 2017 :/
Looks like they forgot about Whalley range
Ikr stuck with dodgy 50mbs
I was one of the first to be installed in Gorton, the work was finally finished in April
