O2 UK Offers 40GB of Free Mobile Data to Disadvantaged Pupils

Mobile network operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has confirmed that they will also be providing 40GB of free data (mobile broadband) a month to enable disadvantaged pupils in years 3 to 11 to continue their learning from home during the latest COVID-19 related national lockdown.

The move is similar to Vodafone’s offer of 30GB data SIMs for 90 days, as well as EE’s (BT) gift of 20GB per month until July 2021, although neither of those are as strong as Three UK’s decision this week to upgrade similar customers to “unlimited data“.

According this page on the Government’s website, Smarty, Virgin Mobile, Tesco (Mobile) and Sky Mobile are also offering temporary increases in mobile data allowances to support disadvantaged children, although we don’t yet have all the details for what each will be offering.

The impact of when each operator decides to release details in a piecemeal fashion, rather than as part of a single shared announcement. But as I always say, you don’t have to read stories that don’t interest you.

Meanwhile Vodafone says oh but we gave out free sims last year.
ok, can i get one now ?
oh , no , sorry all gone.

Of course what they really all should do is zero rate all UK education resources like google clasroom / bbc etc.

Might not be as an easy thing to put in place, most likely not as simple as when they put in place for NHS sites.
