Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband ISP Zoom Internet, which covers a number of areas in West Sussex (e.g. Bognor Regis), appears to be planning to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. The plan will focus on poorly served rural areas, where speeds are sub-10Mbps and no other upgrade plan exists.
The plan was revealed as part of the provider’s submission for Code Powers from Ofcom, which is usually done to help speed-up the deployment of new fibre optic networks and cut costs by reducing the number of licenses needed for street works. In addition, it also helps operators to make use of Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts and poles in order to run their own fibre (Physical Infrastructure Access).
The provider stated that their hybrid approach would allow it to deploy its FTTP access network in areas that cannot be served using FWA “because of hills or dense trees“, and to provide FWA services to customers that do not qualify for a gigabit voucher via the UK Government’s Building Digital UK scheme.
Sadly we couldn’t find any further details about their rollout plan, although their latest micro company accounts reveal that the business has an “average” of just 2 employees (here) and is in need of some extra funding.
@zoom please look into tutbury and hatton
We’ve been added to opereach rollout, but I think by dec 20226
