Civil engineering firm O’Connor Utilities (OCU Group Limited), which among other things is helping a number of operators to build full fibre broadband ISP networks across the UK (Netomnia, CityFibre, Ogi etc.), has today announced the acquisition of telecom installation service provider FKS (UK) Limited.
Since 2010 FKS, which has offices in Wigan and Leeds, has grown to include a labour force of almost 100 personnel, with a client base that stretches from Fujitsu, Telent and Virgin Media to BT and beyond. The company offers 24/7 network maintenance cover, surveying, quality audits, mechanical and blown cable installation, fibre jointing, testing, and commissioning.
O’Conner Utilities notes that FKS will particularly bring a “wealth of specialist fibre experience” to them, which should help to support and expand their fast-growing telecoms offering. The move is very reflective of the high demand for skilled fibre engineers from across the industry today.

Michael Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of OCU Group, said:
“Today’s acquisition of FKS expands our business capabilities and further reinforces our presence in the North and North-west of England. The expertise and experience that FKS brings is a welcome addition to our portfolio and will prove highly complementary to our existing operations and long-term expansion plans in the telecommunications sector.”
Frank Sinker, Operations Director of FKS, said:
“FKS is pleased to become part of the O’Connor Utilities enterprise. As a family-managed company based upon our core principles of service, commitment and value, we have always taken a people-first approach and thus wanted to ensure our business and its people would be transferred to a company that operated in a similar manner. OCU was the ideal acquiror, given they share our vision of a flexible, professional and customer-focused service.”
Sadly, the announcement made no mention of how much money has changed hands under the deal.
” FKS, which has offices in the North of the United Kingdom (e.g. Wigan and Leeds) ”
So I looked at a map of the United Kingdom to check and it seems Leeds is pretty much in the middle, nowhere near the north of the UK.
Sorry, that’s my bad. The PR said “FKS has offices in the North of the UK,” so I was paraphrasing, but after googling some locations I also ended up adding in Leeds and Wigan later, albeit without correcting the original context at the same time.
