Netomnia UK Confirm GBP21m Full Fibre Rollout for Hamilton

Monday, Feb 14th, 2022 (10:35 am) - Score 1,400

At the start of this year we noted that Netomnia were set to extend their UK rollout of a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to more of Scotland, with Hamilton being one of their targets (here). Today the operator has confirmed that they will invest £21m on the town’s build for “almost” 70,000 premises.

The operator, which last year secured £123m of funding (here), has so far covered around 90,000 premises across a number of towns in England, Wales and Scotland (e.g. Ashford, Barrow-in-Furness, Boston, Bridgend, Canterbury, Cheltenham, Durham and many more). The company’s ultimate goal is to reach 1 million UK homes and businesses by the end of 2023, which is very ambitious for such a timescale.

NOTE: The provider is teamed with civil engineering firm KN Circet on the build.

Officially speaking, this project represents only Netomnia’s second deployment in Scotland after their £12m build to cover 40,000 premises in the South Lanarkshire town of East Kilbride. But their future rollout plan also looks set to catch parts of Irvine, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Falkirk, Livingston, Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and Dalkeith.

The service itself is typically supplied to consumers via UK ISP partner YouFibre, which offers unlimited usage, symmetrical speeds, a Wi-Fi router, free installation and 24/7 UK based support. Customers then pay from £22 per month on an 18-month term for their unlimited 50Mbps package, which rises to £40 if you want their top 900Mbps plan. At present, there’s also a special offer that gives the first 3 months of service for free.

Alan O’Prey, MD at Netomnia, said:

“As we build on our journey to connect as many towns and cities as possible with full fibre capabilities, being able to do so in a timely and non-invasive way remains high on the agenda for Netomnia. Hamilton has a rich heritage of impressive and historic buildings. By using existing underground ducting and overhead infrastructure, we are able to provide the technology swiftly and in a way that minimises disruption.”

We should point out that Virgin Media has already covered most of Hamilton with their own gigabit-capable broadband network, while Openreach also has some FTTP in parts of the town and their local build isn’t yet listed as having completed (although the area seems to have been skipped on their future rollout map).

See these guys expanding at a rate of knots. Long way it continue.

Just out of interest, does anyone know what their 10GB package costs?

Can see the 1GB on their website but not the 10.

Business package for 10GB is £250 a month

£250 a month including VAT for residential, £250 + VAT for business.

Keep in mind that this is a maximum. As soon as anyone else in the local area of 64 premises signs up and starts using the service you’ll get some slowdown, however most of the time it’ll be 9000 or close to it.

Given the price of a gigabit leased line a product that delivers 9 Gbit/s burst and is going to sit at 8+ nearly all the time is superb value.

Keep a backup connection if Internet is really important or even vital. This connection will be crazy fast but it is a broadband connection so won’t have the fix times leased lines / DIA do.

I recieved a letter through my door a couple of weeks ago from Netomnia advising that they will start building in my area and to register interest. Based on the number of properties they are planning on covering it does actually sound like they might do all of Hamilton, which would be great. A large western region of Hamilton is actually covered by the Blantyre exchange, I currently have FTTC from the company I work for for a homeworker line and also the 1Gigabit offering from VM but with the shoddy 50mbit upload I would move to YouFibre as soon as possible. Hopefully I will start to see the vans in and around town as the rollout gets going! I will be signing up as soon as I can, my VM contract ends the end of this month so timing couldn’t have been better. I tried to find out how much a static IP is however as I am not keen on using CGNAT, anyone know the monthly charge for a single static?

Static is £5 pcm I believe..
