City-focused UK broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which is rolling out a new gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP/B) network to serve 2 million UK homes by the end of 2023 (900,000 premises are already covered), has launched a new promotion that offers 9 months’ of free broadband to anyone switching from their current contract.
The provider claims that its new ‘Switch Now‘ offer is intended to “help the 19 million households that are stuck in contracts that often give them slow and poor-quality internet, with a price rise looming in 2023.” But in saying all that, they seem to forget that their own network is currently only available to just a fraction of those households.
Nevertheless, the new offer is attractive and the free period of 9 months is intended to help compensate those who may exit their existing contract early and thus incur additional charges. Hyperoptic said that its new service, assuming you can get it, will also “run at the same time as a that of a householder’s current provider, guaranteeing no loss of service in the switchover.”

The deal means that people who switch will also avoid their costs going up even further when the “major providers” apply their annual price rises next spring, many of which are linked to inflation. But they neglect to mention that Sky Broadband and Virgin Media take a different approach. Hyperoptic, which promises not to impose mid-contract hikes, also uses a recent Citi forecast to suggest that some prices may rise as much as around 20% next year (double what we saw in 2022), but it’s still too early to be sure of that outcome.
Hyperoptic CEO, Dana Tobak, said:
“This is a ground-breaking move, unprecedented in the world of broadband, but people all across the UK need this support right now. We honestly believe that it’s the right of every household in the country to have fast, reliable, and affordable broadband.
No one should be held captive by a contract for an overpriced, underwhelming service. That’s why we’re offering Hyperoptic’s full fibre broadband free, helping people switch immediately to avoid massive price rises and make significant savings – typically as much as £160, but often a lot more.”
Hyperoptic also offers a cheaper series of ‘Fair Fibre‘ (social tariff) plans for those on state benefits, which start at just £15 per month for their 50Mbps package. All of this means that Hyperoptic has just become significantly more attractive (to those covered), although they were already a fairly affordable and popular option.
Good to see a difference being made in this climate.
