ISP Virgin Media O2 UK to Boost Some Home Broadband Speeds

Monday, Oct 17th, 2022 (7:08 am) - Score 30,456
1_Virgin-Media-O2-UK-Hub-5-Router

New and existing customers on some of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) home broadband packages look set to see a small speed boost (both downloads and uploads) from 1st November 2022 at no extra charge. The full details have not yet been officially confirmed, but those on the operator’s M100 and M200 packages will see the main benefit.

The boost, which will be available to both new and existing customers on their current M100 (108Mbps down / 10Mbps up) and M200 (213Mbps down / 20Mbps up) plans, looks set to increase the advertised speeds of both packages by 25Mbps (M100 becomes M125) and 50Mbps (M200 becomes M250) respectively. Virgin Media has not yet said what the average profile speed of these revised tiers will be.

NOTE: The change will apply across all of their associated plans, including TV bundles.

The operator’s upload speeds will also be increasing, although we don’t yet know by how much. However, Virgin Media has tended to favour a 10:1 ratio of download to upload performance on these tiers, thus it’s perhaps reasonable to assume that M125 will get an upload boost to 12.5Mbps and M250 will go to 25Mbps.

Much as we reported in August (here), Virgin Media appears to be laying the groundwork for a wider improvement in upload speeds, so it’s likely that other packages may also benefit in the not-too-distant future. Officially speaking, VMO2 aren’t saying anything, but we won’t have long to wait before the full details are known.

meh, would rather have the 25mbits increased on the upload than the download to be honest.

    1. Avatar photo Tim says:

I would rather have virgin media connection that actually worked round my house and not miss sold a sim card I didn’t want and lied about what router I would be getting.

    2. Avatar photo Daelos says:

Exactly 20MB is paltry. The reason I’m on the 200M tariff is literally because the 100M version is only 10M. I’d be much happier with 100M/50M given the choice.

    3. Avatar photo ItsAdam says:

      Likewise,

Although I’d rather have a 2.5GbE hub so I can actually get the 1130mbit they promise instead of the 940 I get on gigabit.

  2. Avatar photo Peter says:

Hopefully they update their upload raito to the 10:1 for all their speeds

  3. Avatar photo bert says:

virgin media also provide the small speed increase with a small price increase

you get nothing for free, particularly where vm is concerned

    1. Avatar photo KAC says:

100%. Always happened like that when I was with Virgin in the past.

  4. Avatar photo Josh says:

I’d just be happy if they were even in my area

    1. Avatar photo keeper says:

I hear ya – they are 9 feet from my font gate but no cigar for me either

  5. Avatar photo James C says:

    Better than nothing I suppose.
Can’t complain as I’m with VM on the 100Mbps package.
Useful increase when downloading games from Steam.
Hoping to get a Hub 4 out of them soon. Actually would prefer that than a speed increase.

    1. Avatar photo Peter says:

I’d try for the Hub 5

    2. Avatar photo Zack says:

That’s only on the 1GB fiber plan I have it and had to fight tooth and nail to get them to upgrade my router

    3. Avatar photo Martin says:

Hub 5 is not all that since I have put the hub 5 in I have next to no WiFi and a ping of 200 to 800 compleatly unstable

    4. Avatar photo Matt says:

      Just had a Hub4 fail, and they replaced it with a Hub4 even though I req’d a Hub5.
      I’m on Gig1.

    5. Avatar photo ItsAdam says:

I’m on Gig1, complained to hell was offered a discount because of no SH5… Never got applied and got told I pay too little already.

      I don’t see how 940mbit(1gbit) hard-line on a SH4 is adequate on a 1130mbit package.

Such a mis selling mess, I’ve had arguments on twitter with a VM muppet telling me there’s something wrong with my SH4 because he constantly gets over 1000mbit on his, and im like you do realise the ports are only 1000mbit,with overheads you’re never getting anywhere close to 1000 let alone beyond!

  6. Avatar photo Josh says:

Wonder when the 2.2 will be rolling out….

  7. Avatar photo Jpno5 says:

Move to Vodafone, 1gbit symmetrical for 27 a month

    1. Avatar photo aqx says:

Not everyone can get that. If you’re in the area sure but if not then you’re stuck with what you’ve got.

    2. Avatar photo keeper says:

yes lucky for some – I have to pay 1-x and then some to get a decent service in the country ohh arr!

    3. Avatar photo keeper says:

10x and then some I meant!

    4. Avatar photo Keith says:

Wish I could. Not available in my area. Nor is 5G or FTTP. So it’s 4G broadband or Virgin Media for us. And because it’s Virgin Media, we have to have 5G as well. Because it’s unreliable.

Interestingly, I get lower ping on 5G than Virgin.

    5. Avatar photo Daelos says:

Got Community Fibre and G-Network being installed as we speak. Switch on day November. Gonna be first in the queue!.

Openreach FTTC was awful around here so had to hold my nose and go Virgin. I’ll be so happy when the alternatives arrive.

    6. Avatar photo ItsAdam says:

Vodafone isn’t, its BFA fibre with is stuck at about 120mbit. Unless you’re looking at leased lines or inter City connect and then fibre optic etc are a cheap choice

    7. Avatar photo keeper says:

So 5G is not available in your area – but you use 5G as VM is unreliable?

Seriously.. I’d say you couldn’t make that up but seeing as ya did..

  8. Avatar photo Jacob says:

Would be nice if they did go to 10:1 upgrade for there all packages

  9. Avatar photo Andy Pryce says:

I had VM100 and was getting 110Mbit download and 20Mbit upload, but recently the upload dropped to around 8Mbit. I get much faster speeds from my 4G EE mobile phone, 145 download and 31 upload. I wish Virgin would increase their upload speed.

    1. Avatar photo Greg says:

I have the same issue. I’m on 250mb package. About 2, maybe 3 months ago i have received a letter from Virgin saying that they will be working on a network improvement one day and after that i can see that a broadband speed went down. It’s quite strange, as if you check a speed on speedtest.net i’m getting a full speed but since then wifi speeds dropped and also online platforms like netflix, disney or amazon are loading way longer. Ping is also extremally high and my son cannot sometimes play the online games. Im not happy with Virgin at all, they are getting worst over a time but i have no alternative in my area

    2. Avatar photo Terry Holmes says:

Andy Ring VM ask them to remove the limiter on your connection. Tel

  10. Avatar photo Gavin says:

Would be nice if some data limited cheaper tariffs come out. As being single and working most of the time I only use my connection occasionally. Might just get a unlimited data SIM when my internet contract ends.

  11. Avatar photo Lynn Randle says:

Our virgin internet is hopeless at moment keeps going off can’t get it in bedrooms sometimes used to be able take my tablet outside but not anymore keeps freezing rubbish so be looking for something better been with them for 20 years

    1. Avatar photo Winston Smith says:

This is a problem with WiFi not with broadband. Either call VM and ask for WiFi pods or get a mesh WiFi system.

  12. Avatar photo Laurence cope says:

    What about those on M50.

  13. Avatar photo Philip says:

VM appear to have a recent promotion moving the M50 customers to M100.

    https://www.virginmedia.com/virgin-tv-edit/customer-exclusive/broadband-speed-boost

    1. Avatar photo Chris H says:

They have not moved me from M50, no communication from VM regarding any of this.

  14. Avatar photo Sayek says:

I been on Virgin 3 years now after moving from Talktalk 35. You should not rely on the Hub 3 or the latest Hub 5 for Wi-Fi. You are actually paying for the speed via wired connection. Spend £100 on a midrange 2 disc mesh like BT whole Wi-Fi and you will notice the change.

Yes you need to threaten to leave them every time contract due for renewal or price doubles. Was previous paying £24 for M200 and 5GB SIM. Recently renewed for £18 same deal. No other ISP can match this combo deal.

  15. Avatar photo RobB says:

I already see 220/21 on my 200 account.
Will not be happy if they nurf it!!!

    1. Avatar photo Matt says:

Thats not how virgin work. They overprovision – so you always get more than you pay for. e.g. gig1 is normally around 1200mbit.

    2. Avatar photo Sayek says:

Same here..I get constant 220/20..we must be the lucky ones. I think we should expect 260/25 soon.

  16. Avatar photo Oli says:

    It’s confusing.

I thought it was a 20% upload as per the post in the following thread.

Buy your own router guys, virgin routers are best when set in modem mode. Unleash the film power of their internet . I get 500m down the bottom of the 100 ft plus garden since using a net gear nighthawk router .

  18. Avatar photo Philip says:

Just rebooted our VM HUB3 to see the M100 upgrades have already started.

The new upstream : downstream ratio is now close to 15%.

We have a VM maintenance window on Friday – so perhaps we hold our breath until after that !

  19. Avatar photo bill says:

fwiw, a relative with M100 reported speed test returned 125Mbps down and 20Mbps up today.

  20. Avatar photo SnoopZ says:

My M200 has been boosted, looks like it’s national so reboot those modems guys.

    Config showing:
    Downstream
    287500061 bps

    Upstream
    27500061 bps

    Speedtest Results for 200mbit tier.
    Downstream 283Mbps
    Upstream 27Mbps

Just rebooted my router and its jumped from 220/20 to 275/27 via Wi-Fi

  21. Avatar photo CliveC says:

On the business 1 Gb/s – early today had a reboot of the Hitron Chita device – when it restated there were 5 DOCSIS 3.0 upstreams and one DOCSIS 3.1 upstream, just as we’ve seen reported by the residential service. This was accompanied with an upstream speed boost. Previously it was 50 Mb/s on this business service – now I am regualrly geting 80 Mb/s and some peaks at 95 Mb/s. It seems a bit variable at the moment and often falls back to 60 Mb/s

  22. Avatar photo Sagi Suri says:

    My M100 Went from 113/10 to 137/20.9

  23. Avatar photo Dick Morris says:

Increased speed now seen in Poole Dorset.
System went down on Friday a couple of times, and now 149 upload and 23 download which is a good improvement.
Will this be a reason for a new price increase..???
    Roll on DOCSIS 4.0…..

  24. Avatar photo greggles says:

Will they hold off these in areas that have not yet had the DOCSIS upgrade to keep congestion as low as possible or will marketing win?

  25. Avatar photo Disgrntled Derek says:

Earlier this year a bus hit a VM cab in the housing estate next to me, and all VM customers had no service for c.6 days. I went through the website to register the loss of service, and was told that’s it, nothing else needed from me, and I will get money back based on £X/day and will be applied to a future bill. Called up last month to enquire about this money back, and they have nothing on their records to say anything about the loss of service or the registering of the loss of service. SO angry with them that I will def be going elsewhere after my contract is up, even though it’s reduced speed. I hate the dishonesty.
    Goodbye VM.
