TalkTalk Winks at Sky While Turning Satellite TV Dishes into Art

Broadband ISP TalkTalk UK has today moved to promote their latest Pay TV Hub by partnering with mural artist Qubek (Russell Meheen) to create a “live street art stunt” (Dish it Out), which turns old satellite TV dishes into art. The aim is to highlight how people are “spending unnecessarily” on “expensive” TV plans (wink.. wink.. Sky).

The stunt doesn’t actually mention Sky TV by name, but it’s fairly clear that’s who they’re aiming this at (we can exclude Freesat because that’s not a pay TV platform). On the other hand, this does rather overlook how Sky can now also offer their services via the broadband-based Sky Stream and Sky Glass products, which don’t require a satellite dish.

Russell Meheen, also known as Qubek, apparently has a reputation for uplifting redundant spaces across the north of England and enriching them with thought-provoking street art. TalkTalk’s latest stunt, titled Dish it Out, was unveiled at 9am today at the Grand Central Station food court in Birmingham.

As part of this, Qubek has transformed old TV satellite dishes into an “eye-catching piece of art that symbolises outdated and often high-priced TV packages.”

Jonathan Kini, MD of TalkTalk Consumer, said:

“We’re aiming to highlight that you don’t need to break the bank when it comes to TV. Old tech often takes up lots of space, while some of the newer TV packages come with a big price tag and lengthy contracts. That’s why we’ve launched our new TV Hub – the smarter, simpler and more flexible way to stay entertained for only £5 a month.”

Admittedly, the symbolism of this may also work both ways, since you don’t strictly need to take TalkTalk’s Android TV powered TV Hub product either. Most of the content that such platforms provide can now be taken via Apps on various other streaming sticks and internet-connected TVs etc.

I am interested in some sports events only but I can’t imagine myself paying ~£85/mo for it to watch just one event during the weekend.

Sounds like Now TV might be the platform for you…

£12/day for Sky Sports only. BT is £10/month on 2 year long contract. Which means £22-£58/month. Still way too much for what I am watching.

Support your local pub instead and watch sports events there.

Would not touch Talk Talk with a barge pole.

I’ve been with them for many years and they are spot on.

@Richard, I know people who have been with them for a while, and they are fine, but after having to contract them on behalf of other people over the years, granted for their ADSL services, their iffy sales reps, the way they tried to connect a mate to their service when he did not even order it and the fact they were hacked by a teenager, are the reasons why I would not touch them with a barge pole

Yes Adrian, we know that…as you’ve already told us about 2 billion times.

Talktalk are taking the fun out of Sky but to be honest all TalkTalk are doing is getting customers to pay per month an android box. You can easily buy an android box. Think TalkTalk need to offer some actual packages such as an entertainment package. Sports package, children’s package and international package. They did this before and was a good idea. Dont understand why they stopped it.

An Android big with built in Freeview though and NOW TV, it’s actually appealing.

I’m not sure what they are value-adding over and beyond using NOW TV with a generic streaming box/stick.

Like, BT TV at least has Freeview (and now the same via their multicast network so you don’t need an aerial) + channels that are not on NOW.

Everyone on TalkTalk can go for Sky Stream or NOW TV directly and avoid the dish.

Curiously the website says “Available to TalkTalk TV customers with superfast fibre from just £4.99 a month. Coming soon to full fibre plans.” – wonder why FTTP users are presently restricted from getting it.

Talk Talk used to be the budget provider, that have not been the case for a while in that they are no cheaper than others these days and certainly more expesnive on FTTC than Now broadband. According to their website I can’t get their FTTP, and yet we have had Openreach FTTP here since before Christmas.
