One of Openreach’s patch lead broadband engineers in Scotland, known publicly only as Andrew, deserves a spot of special credit in the news today after he recently downed tools to attend a passer-by who had suddenly suffered a heart attack. The man survived and is currently receiving further treatment in hospital.
The network operator informs that Andrew was performing some routine repairs to damaged underground cables, but all that changed after cries for help echoed out just 10 metres away from the site as a passer-by suffered a heart attack.
At this point Andrew sprang into action, administering CPR for several long minutes while waiting for a local ambulance to arrive. An update from Police Scotland later confirmed the man had survived and was receiving further treatment in hospital.

A Spokesperson for Openreach said:
“Andrew’s timely response, honed by his first aid training, made a world of difference on that fateful day. Moments like these show the impact our team can have beyond the day job of keeping people connected. Well done, Andrew!”
Well done indeed. A lot of work places give people training in CPR these days and, thankfully, most of us never end up needing to use it. But on those rare days when you do, it can save a life.
Top man.
Well done.
it’s good to read a heart warming story, if you’ll pardon the pun
Its time for everyone to learn how to do CPR and use a defib. Lets all save lives.
Thank you Andrew, great job
Well done Andrew. good stuff!
Excellent news. But what’s a “patch lead broadband engineer”? Does he only work with pre-made CAT5e cables?
A Patch Lead is like a foreman / supervisor / managers assistant type job but with lower wages.
Leader of a specific network “patch” (area) / group.
Arrhythmia Alliance is a non-profiting charity who are passionate about highlighting the importance of CPR and having access to a public AED at any time. Unfortunately, a heart attack or SCA can strike at anytime and does not discriminate by gender or age.
We would be most grateful if you can send on our contact details to Andrew, we would really like to send our congratulations to him, or alternatively, would you please find out if he is willing to share his contact details with the Charity.
Thank you andrew
