Customers of UK Full Fibre Broadband ISP Toob Suffer Outage UPDATE

Friday, Aug 9th, 2024 (7:11 pm) - Score 4,120

Alternative network operator toob, which has deployed a gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Southern England (parts of Hampshire, Dorset and Surrey), appears to have been suffering from a service outage “across our network” this afternoon.

The situation appears to have started at just after 5:30pm this afternoon and promptly spread to a significant portion of their customer base. According to a statement posted via X/Twitter (here): “We’re aware of an issue currently impacting customers across our network. Telephone lines are extremely busy at this time but please be assured engineers are working hard to restore service. Our teams thank you for your patience.”

The provider has also posted a related update to their Service Status page, although it’s a bit more generic. The good news is that in the last few minutes customers have started to report that their connections have returned to normal, which hopefully means that the issue is resolved.

Toob’s service status page now reports that “there are currently no known service interruptions.”

Bit worrying. They are in my area soon, with OR fibre around the same time. Toob is the best deal, but this is their second major downtime.

That’s what happens when altnets don’t have rigorous procedures and not putting enough money to make the network resillent. It’s a common theme with altnets

All networks have major outages, usually several a year and that’s before the daily local ones are taken into account at different places across the country. Lots of things can go wrong.

These things happen, it is a bit annoying, but it happens. I have been with Zzoomm for over 12 months now and yes they did have some problems at the start, slow-downs more than total failures, certainly in the evening when things got busy, we would have speeds lower than FTTC, sometimes dial up :). Due to a broken trunk that someone have decided to dig into, and it was not just Zzoomm it affected. But the last 10 months or so it has been prefect.
the main problems with Zzoom, is the router, which I don’t use and the customer service could be a bit snappier.

Angoor miah, or who ever it is, is just another Openreach fan,, let’s not have any alternative network, let’s just have openreach so they can keep on charging high prices to ISPs and we pay for it, in other words, no doubt a BT shareholder. Also, openreach or the providers on their network have had their fair share of problems. openreach is not as great as people think they are.

Yes, I hate Openreach. but i do praise them when it is due, like when i had a problem some years ago with FTTC, they were here pretty quick, just a shame that after 3 visits they still had no idea what the problem was. The only way I could get broadband without it cutting out was to use a Huawei modem.

all networks? Can’t remember the last time the BT IP network went down. There was a DNS upset involving Plusnet a few months ago, but that wasn’t everyone and everywhere (pun not intended). Ditto EE’s recent wifi calling issue.

No, this is nonsense. Large scale outages over a wide area are not at all common.

I’m with an Altnet and no issues at all, don’t state things which are not true.

Yes there is toob Southampton is still down

    1. Avatar photo Josh says:

It was only down for about 30 mins. Virgin media had more frequent downtime during our custom than Toob and took longer to resolve each time with worse communication. So characterising this as an issue with smaller networks seems a little disingenuous. Toob service – ping and upload speed – is much superior to Virgin not to even mention the price

    2. Avatar photo Ad47uk says:

@Josh, I don’t even live in a Virgin area, but I have heard a lot about them and most are not good and they are large enough to sort it out.,

  3. Avatar photo Terry Parrott says:

It was down for approaching 2 hours not 30 mins.

    1. Avatar photo Josh says:

Quite probably/possibly for some but down detector reports scaled off rapidly after 45 mins so for majority of customers it appears it was a relatively brief (if ill peak-timed) interruption of 30-60 mins.

Waiting for Toob to deliver into Park Gate area, but equally not having a single Virgin outage since joining in 2021 makes me wonder re options..
