Netomnia UK Extend Newport FTTP Broadband Network to 30,000 Premises
Alternative broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group, YouFibre), which has already built their UK full fibre (FTTP) network to cover over 3 million premises RFS (inc. 500,000 customers), have confirmed that their deployment across the city of Newport in Wales has so far reached 30,000 local homes and businesses.
The original deployment in Newport first began in October 2022 (here). At the time Netomnia said they planned to invest up to £21.6m on the city’s roll-out and had appointed street works firm O’Connor Utilities to conduct the build, which was intended to reach a target of 72,000 premises.
Suffice to say that Netomnia is still quite a way short of their original build target and the company’s COO seems to be indicating that they’re now focused more on commercialisation, rather than further expansion. At present most of the active FTTP build activity that we can see in Newport is coming from Openreach and Grain Connect. Both Openreach and Virgin Media (inc. nexfibre) already have significant gigabit broadband coverage of the city.

Netomnia has long held an ambition to extend their FTTP network to reach 5 million UK premises by 2027 (inc. 1 million customers by 2028), although that now seems likely to be a target that will be merged into nexfibre’s future roll-out plans (depending upon the CMA’s competition review). Meanwhile, prices for YouFibre’s broadband packages start at £24 per month for symmetric speeds of 200Mbps on a 12-month fixed-price term and rise to £99.99 for their top 7-8Gbps tier. All packages include free installation and a Wi-Fi 7 router.

South Wales seems to be swamped by suppliers, yet the North Wales Coast is just Openreach!
It’s a monopoly by choice me thinks. If Netomnia hadn’t come to Wrexham there would of been just as thin a choice there as well. With the merger it’s unlikely to be any difference in the future.
