Alternative UK broadband ISP Wessex Internet, which is deploying a mix of full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) networks across Southern England, has announced that their Community Hub initiative has now connected 212 local projects to their network for just £1.
Under the Community Hub scheme, Wessex Internet connects one local project in every area where it builds its network for £1. The first was West Knoyle Village Hall in October 2016 and ten years on, the scheme supports 212 community hubs benefitting from a £1 connection including 97 village halls, which are often the centre of a rural community.
Some 109 of the 212 sites have been connected under the government’s Project Gigabit broadband contract with the provider. In addition, Wessex Internet have supported multiple charities through the scheme, including the North Dorset Beekeepers Association, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and The Yellow Bus Project. To date, the provider has invested more than £350,000 in rural charities and community projects.

The network operator, which is currently working to expand their rural full fibre infrastructure to cover 137,000 premises (here), has so far already reached 66,000 properties and laid over 7,700km of fibre optic broadband cable across some of the hardest‑to‑reach areas in the Southwest. Wessex Internet employs around 350 people across civils and garden works, sales, customer service and installation, and most of them live locally.

They bully farmers into building onto their land with little to no compensation, even though potential issues could happen on the land, nasty/ bullying emails the ceo needs to look into how their wayleave team work it’s disgusting even had comments from another broadband company wayleave team that the way Wessex deal with it is discusting. The NFU have a framework for this and Wessex ignore and just pay pennies instead and bully.
