Broadband ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has announced that they’ve just successfully completed a new trial, which pushed their new DOCSIS 3.1 based network to “hyperfast” 2.2Gbps download speeds (and 214Mbps upload speeds) in the Berkshire (England) market town of Thatcham.

Residents in the tiny rural village of Aberhosan (Powys, Wales) have finally seen an end to 18-months of unusually slow and unstable broadband ISP connectivity after engineers, working for Openreach (BT), traced the source of the disruption to an old television set, which had been leaking electrical interference (SHINE).

Openreach (BT) has today hailed the efforts of 750 engineers who have helped them to extend their commercial rollout of 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP technology, which now covers over 50% of Northern Ireland (420,000 premises); considerably more than Scotland, Wales or England.

Space company OneWeb, which is now owned by a consortium of the UK Government and Indian conglomerate Bharti Global (here), has today confirmed that they will begin sending their high-speed broadband capable Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites into orbit again from December 2020.

The Broadband Forum has kicked off the development of a new standards focused open source and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) based broadband speed test, which aims to deliver “more accurate results” and “updated methods and metrics which are more suited to the gigabit services now being deployed.”

The boss of budget broadband ISP TalkTalk, Tristia Harrison, has said that the idea of traditional office working is “over” and “no one believes we’ll return to 100% occupancy, five days a week, nine to five.” Instead the internet provider envisages more home working and, she adds, “all” the other bosses agree.

A new survey commissioned by broadband ISP TalkTalk has found that 58% of workers in the UK said they had been more productive as a result of working from home during the COVID-19 lockdown, while 52% never expect to return to the office full time. Internet traffic on the provider’s network also remains above normal.

The Scottish Government (SG) has today announced a new funding package of £4 million, which will be used to establish a new “national network of hubs” – S5GConnect Hubs – to help accelerate the adoption of ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) technology across Scotland.

Full fibre UK broadband ISP Jurassic Fibre, which plans to cover 350,000 premises with a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in South West England (here and here), has confirmed that they’ll start to expand outside of Devon and into Somerset, with Honiton and Taunton being the next two areas to benefit.
