Local UK Councils Rail Against Surge in Trojan Telephone Boxes

The Local Government Association, which represents 370 councils across England and Wales, has called on the central UK government to tackle the growing tide of “trojan telephone boxes” (e.g. boxes installed almost solely for advertising) by removing their Permitted Development status.

Completed on time. The Government has today confirmed that an estimated 95% of the United Kingdom can now access a 24Mbps+ capable fixed line “superfast broadband” network as a result of their national £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK programme, but many gaps remain.

BT Fined £70K by Ofcom UK for Failing to Provide Information UPDATE

Telecoms giant BT has been hit with a £70,000 fine after the regulator, Ofcom, ruled that the UK operator had failed to provide requested information as part of their ongoing Wholesale Local Access Market Review, which is examining how fixed broadband and phone services are supplied to ISPs and sold.

Citizens Advice Blasts Poor Reliability of UK Mobile and Broadband ISPs

The Citizens Advice agency has claimed that 6 out of 10 broadband users have suffered from slow speeds or had their connection stop working in the last year. As a result they are calling on the government to “strengthen the voices of telecoms consumers” by establishing a consumer advocate.

Sky Say Goodbye to NOW TV Combo and Hello NOW Broadband

Sky’s sibling NOW TV video streaming platform has announced that UK customers will soon be able to take their contract-free broadband ISP and phone service, albeit without needing to bundle it alongside TV as part of a “Combo“. A new NOW TV Smart Stick (Roku) is also being introduced.

Phone and broadband provider Gateway Telecom (GW Telecom Ltd.) has been hit with a fine of £20,000 after the national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, ruled that they had broken the rules by “not enabling a customer to keep their telephone number when switching to another provider.”

SSE Cut UK Phone and Broadband Prices for Non-Energy Customers
